Japan Gets True Online Multiplayer For Gran Turismo PSP
These days, you need an online multiplayer mode - for better or for worse - in order to have the ultimate in widespread appeal. This goes double for games that lend themselves to multiplayer fun, like sports and racing titles.
Obviously, it'll be huge for Gran Turismo 5 but unfortunately, true multiplayer has been lacking in Gran Turismo PSP since its launch last week. Basically, we only have the option of ad/hoc multiplayer, which means you can only play with other players who are within wireless range. That stays the same for us lowly US players but those situated in Japan can now utilize their PS3 to race online in GT PSP. As reported by Examiner.com, players can link up to the PS3, which in turn sends out a wireless signal that will let you connect with other PSP players. Basically, when doing this, the PSP still thinks it's in standard ad/hoc mode; it's just using the PS3 as the main connection source. This may sound super new and neat-o, but the tricky feature was already available in the PSP iteration of Monster Hunter, so it won't come as a huge surprise to Japanese gamers. But as we just mentioned, this will only be available in Japan so North American and European GT PSP owners will have to be happy with regular ol' ad/hoc multiplayer, which isn't a terrible option. Better than nothing, no?
Of course, there's no predicting the future. If there's enough demand for it, you can bet Sony will find a way to bring this feature - or true online multiplayer - to this region for GT PSP.

Last time I heard, Ad-hoc party was coming to the US sometime in fall or winter so get ready to get your ad-hoc only games ready, oh, and don't forget your headset/bluetooth because you can voice chat during games via PS3/PSN.
