Gran Turismo Franchise: 53 Million Copies Sold Worldwide
The Gran Turismo franchise has been huge since the very first day it emerged on the original PlayStation. But do you realize just how many people have enjoyed this increasingly realistic driving simulator?
The overall sales figures for all installments across all platforms and all regions have been revealed, and as you can see, the numbers are totally over-the-top. Perhaps surprisingly, the series has sold the most total copies in Europe; the nearly 25 million sold in European regions comprises almost half of the overall sales...which, by the way, is around 53 million. Now, with the continual debate revolving around multiplatform vs. exclusive games, we should point out that Gran Turismo has never appeared on anything but a PlayStation platform. Perhaps because of this focus, most all critics will agree that GT continually sets the bar in terms of authenticity and spectacular visuals with each successive entry. Furthermore, Polyphony has hardly gone begging over the past decade so the belief that a developer can't make a profit producing exclusive titles also appears to be false. Granted, it would sell more if GT5 also came out on the Xbox 360, but would the designer have been able to provide both sets of players with the same experience? And would it have been as good?
Well, that debate will continue to rage but the point is, 53 million copies sold worldwide is a very big number, and we should congratulate Polyphony on a job well done.
