Analyst: "True Successor" To The PSP Unveiled In 2010
If you pay attention to gaming news (other than what we typically report on here at PSXE), you know about Nintendo's announcement of the 3DS early yesterday.
Yep, a 3D model of the insanely popular Nintendo DS handheld. But while that may have been surprising, one analyst believes it's only the first of three possible new hardware announcements that will drop this year. According to MCVUK, Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian has predicted that Sony will announce "a true successor to the PSP" in 2010, an that's in addition to a follow-up to the Wii, which has been declining in popularity over the past few years. Said Sebastian in a new investor's report:
"While 3D games remain on the drawing board and not yet on store shelves, the emergence of new 3D game platforms could breathe more life into the hardware market. Along with the launch later this year of new motion sensing controllers for the PS3 and Xbox, there are several multiple growth drivers for the industry over the coming one-to-two years with new physical products.
We expect Sony to announce a new PSP handheld device this spring, and Nintendo is likely to announce an updated console in the coming year, which could also help to reinvigorate the market."
At this point, even Nintendo has acknowledged their backward slide with the Wii, so a new console wouldn't be surprising, especially in the wake of the more advanced motion sensing technologies coming out for the PS3 and Xbox 360. We have heard in the past that Sony may attempt a relaunch of the PSP Go but that's not what Sebastian has referred to, here; he's talking about the PSP2. That has been yet another big rumor... Guess it's another wait and see situation.

And an OLED screen would definitely be appealing since now HD is pretty much being standard now.

As for tilting, it's pretty dumb in my opinion. Unlike home consoles, the handheld screens are ON the controller. When you tilt or shake, you won't be able to see the image. It doesn't work well or make sense to do so. It works for ipod, but those games are dumbed down for casual gamers.
There are plenty of functionalities that are available in handhelds, like the cameras in DSi, that were never used in any games.

He's probably yelling in his office right about now: "GOD DAMN MOTHER FUCKING PRESS LEAKS!!!" Lmao!
No I kind of do feel sorry for him last year since most of the secrets were out - such as PS3 slim (it definitely was going to be announced then...just w/ all the press leaks - they wanted to still make it a surprise by delaying the announcement till TGS), PSP go, and the Last Guardian.
Although the gaming community is hungry to know what's up and coming - I want to see Jack wow people, that guy always brings a smile to my face.

I am also predicting a return of the Power Glove. And yes. Yes, I'll buy one. The original was almost useless as a controller, but I wore it all the time to pretend I was Robocop. I think if they make a new one it will work much better than the Wii controller.

Next, let's get some sales on PSN games. I know that every once and while they have a sale, but let's put the exclusive games on sale. I'm not paying $39.99 for a download copy of Resistance Retribution or Little Big Planet. Why not encourage weekly sales to boost your business?
My favorite feature on the PSP Go is the comic book store. I simply love it! Let's continue to beef up the selection shall we?
Perhaps they could add an application to stream Pandora Radio...How about a Facebook app?
Last E3 Sony execs got on stage and touted the fact that franchises such as Resident Evil would get their own PSP games. This year you have the much anticipated release of Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker...What's Sony going to do now? Pull a 180 and just stop? This is ridiculous.
And if Sony is going to make a PSP2. Here are MUST have features.
1. At least 32 GB of HDD or Flash Memory
2. Bluetooth
3. 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
4. A Mini Cell Processor
5. An HD compatable OLED screen
6. PSP Backwards compatibility

I think 3D is irrelevant in the hand held space. Nintendo is really grasping at straws with this.
The worst thing is it will probably sell a crap-ton of units almost all of which will end up languishing in junk drawers just like Sega Game Gears did.

Not sure about a new Wii, the people who buy those just don't care about a newer, better model. Do they? I mean, it's like a $10 toaster. As long as it works, nobody cares about the new $15 model. Anything more expensive would kill its entire appeal, which is dwindling even at its present price.

Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Walmart and Wii.....massive brand names. The mass media would be all over a new Wii announcement. Even if only half of the original Wii owners went out and bought a new updated version, it'd still be a huge success story.
