PSP To Get Touchscreen Functionality?

The ESRB has recently rated 13 brand new PSP titles and one of them has certainly turned some heads.

The very name of the game is a hint: if you check this particular ESRB listing, you'll notice that "Finger Connection" has been rated and the implication is obvious. Okay, so the title is quirky and interesting but the primary point of interest is the possibility of a touchscreen for the PSP, or perhaps they're referring to an upgrade for the PSP Go. Then again, we've all heard semi-confirmed reports of the PSP2 and the whispers of a PSP Phone of some kind persist. There are several possibilities but now it seems inevitable that Sony will go the touchscreen route with their handheld unit, and the question is, do the consumers want this? It's not exactly the iPad but it seems that such technology is awfully popular these days, and it'll be interesting to have for certain games. The description of this one reads:

"This is a multiplayer party game in which players spin a wheel that tells them to place their fingers on colored spots on a board. Players lose if their hands become too twisted to place their finger on the chosen spot."

Cool! A virtual Twister! Why do we get the feeling we'll have to put the unit down and stand over it so we can manipulate all our fingers accordingly? ...this is starting to get a vaguely sexual connotation... Well, whatever; we still have to keep an eye out for the touchscreen addition to Sony's portable.

They'd be fools NOT to go the touch screen route. When your competition is kicking your ass, it's time to sit up and take notice of what they're doing right and what you're doing wrong.

Touch screen, phone and a second nub! Why is that so hard for Sony to figure out??

I say that the next PSP (PSP 2) will have touch screen.But you're right, every thing uses touch these days, they'd be insane to not get into that with a portable device such as the PSP. The friggen DS uses it for crying out loud!

Foy Sony's sake, this better be something for the PSP2. So far the PSP Go has been a huge failure, and touchscreen support simply cannot save it.

I fear that if the PSP suffers another failure Sony's entire handheld effort may be doomed.

Maybe failue is a strong word, but it certainly hasn't done very well. The high price point and digital distribution really soured the deal for most consumers. While the DS, (every damn variation of it,) are flying off the shelves I have only seen a handful of Gos sold at the Gamestop I work at. And from what I've heard it's like that everywhere else.

It's very hard to find sales figures for the Go vs. the regular PSP, but some website had an article a few months ago and the sales of the Go were truly dismal. Something like 10% of total PSP sales.

I love the GO haha. I didn't use my 3000 since I got it.

Pretty much just as big as my Omnia II and I use it as my main MP3 and Video player. Screen looks clearer and sharper since its the same resolution for a bit smaller screen too. Disgaea portable got me hooked bad :D

That and DoA paradise LOL gotta love black jack with moaning japanese women XD XD XD

Lol the sexual side of this is hilarious, but it sounds like an interesting concept. I don't know if I'd like it... And I don't know if I'd go out for it. And it seems like people would go nuts over it. Touchscreen? Hell yeah. But for me? Not so much... I never got into the whole touchscreen thing. It's just iffy with me.
Although, I'd give it a shot, I suppose.

Touchscreen computers are pointless IMO. It takes more movement to swipe at a screen than it does to flip the wrist with a mouse and click. Touchsceen has a place where mice aren't available (cellphones/handhelds).

i think it would be awesome if they did incorporate that kind of thing. it may not have to be used all the time but the option of it being there opens up a lot of potential. weather or not i will get one based on the touch screen i dont know. i have a psp-2000 and there arent enough games comin out even at this point that i really want. there are some but there needs to be more. damn piracy

Hey E3 is June 15-17 can't wait its going to be very interresting.

PS This touch screen crap better be optional some games it just wont work with.
This is when of the resons I hate the DS.

well cell phones didnt use them in any way. computers didnt. just because you dont think it would work it just might. i wouldnt want to see it used as the main control scheme but it could be innovative. just like the motion controlls in the ds3. it doesnt have to be a mainfeature but being there leaves fun ideas.

think of the music games. that dj hero infact could benifit from the touchscreen psp if those moneywhores wanted to milk that. touch screen opens the ability to add buttons any where and whenever a devolper wants.

PSP Go is a rip off in a way. $250 bucks for a gaming system where you do not own a hardcopy of the game. Unless they adjust the price or let us upload the UMD games to the PSP Go. We'll have to pay the full price for a game you technically do not own.

Well those that don't want the Go still have the 3000 to buy. Some people like the smaller size and lack of a UMD drive. Having more choices is nice and I see the Go as Sony's testing of the digital download market for the eventual PSP2.

The Go is costly but its tempting. I love playing my PS1 classics on my PSP. Something smaller and lighter then my 1000 like the GO would be cool. But i won't play $250 for it.

Well it does have 16gb of intern memory. So far it sells well when I tell the people that the card (16gb) is sold for about 100$ when the price of the GO is only 80$ more than the 3000 (core). Of course those are the prices here in Quebec so I don't know how that applies to you people.

And you also get a USB cable with the GO... That is an extra 10$ for the 3000 and right now we have promotions and stuff like free psp Go case with it worth 20$... So when you look at it like that it ain't that much more expensive.

Touchscreen? Why not? As long as the other standard controls are still there. I can't stand devices that remove the conventional controls in favor of touch screen. Touch screen is a terrible method for controlling conventional games. Sure it has it's place, but it's hardly universal, so by all means add the feature, but keep the rest of the controls.

hey since were talking psp... is there a camera for this thing? seriously? what is with this stupid icon? i strongly suggest for the psp2 that sony does not put icons to things the thing will not support. unless im wrong and someone can tell me where to but a camera for my psp...

Yes, the PSP can utilize a camera. This accessory has been available since 2006 and you can buy one off Amazon though it's rather expensive.

wow thank you first one of those i have ever seen. now that i am seeing all of the stuff available for the psp it kind of annoys me this stuff isnt in stores. i dont always want to order something online. sometimes i want an excuse to get out of the house and go somewhere. another reason i dont want only digital media... it makes me lazy.

Haha, I don't really equate online shopping with being lazy. I do it because it's cheaper and I can't stand many brick/mortar stores. If I don't want to feel like I'm lazy I'll go play basketball or go for a run. When it comes to my shopping habits I typically use Amazon or other online stores.

BTW there are quite a few cool accessories for the PSP. Banky has a ton of them I believe, you should talk to him about it he comes across as a PSP Connoisseur.

what for?
all its going to do is increase the cost of the system, and i hope it does not turn into the Iphone games on that thing are hard enough to control as it is!
plus its going to need some decent games first!
you can turn it into a gold plating machine for all i care, its not going to sell till you put some decent games out for it!

honestly what games are coming out for the psp that are not available on the ps3 this year?
all i can think of is metal gear solid peace walker, 1 game for a whole year kinda pathetic!

cant hurt, besides increasing the price. if it comes at the expense of the second analog nub i'll be irate.

besides, i have an iphone for completely touchscreen games, i can borrow my brothers ds for hybridized touch/button games, i need my psp for gaming that i dont have to have a third hand for. MH is hard enough as it is.

what could be useful is tilt control. most of the games i keep on my iphone (top gun, labyrinth) are tilt based, not touchscreen based, least the main mechanic is. if you could give me top gun where i control by tilting and could operate weapons with the buttons, id preorder that bi*** and the system it was on.

No I don't want a touchscreen on a PSP! If I wanted that I'd get a DS. I just want to play regular games on a PSP, not kiddie stuff.

I hope we get an announcement of the PSP2 at E3. Been waiting to buy one until they add a second analog stick. I sincerely hope they don't nix that idea for a stinkin' touch screen gimmick. I think it's pretty obvious what people want, and it isn't a Nintendo PSP.

I like the prospect of such a feature. Look at it this way ok, keep the same relative design as now, make the screen a wee bit bigger and add a AMOLED screen for higher resolutiona and better picture. I heard rumors this PSP2 would have Laptop quality graphics cards and above a 1 GHZ processor, might be pushing it but one can dream right? I love the idea of a Beaterator type application for the feature, like beting the screen for different drum beats and the likes of that nature, could be very fun, hey maybe even fingerprint recognition. Am I the only person that gets woried about the security of my PSP and the info in it? I think not, I at least want a damn lock screen when I turn it on, like the iPhone where theres the digit passkey, that would be very handy

I dont really want touch screen. What I want is dual analog!!!

I personnally think it is annoying to always have freakin fingeprints on my display. The DS works fine because of the stylus and dual display. The display I look at the most is the upward one that never gets a finger in it.

I like to keep my display shiny clean with no crap between me and the game.

Think about it... Did you guys ever want to put your fingers on your 46 inch LCD to shoot people at KZ2?! NO. But it would be a pain to do so if you didnt have those dual analogs :D. So there it is. Dual analog would totally own a crappy touch dirty screen.
