Kojima Reacts To High Scores For Peace Walker
Nobody was all that surprised to see the glowing critical reception with which Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was received in Japan, but even the man himself was a little worried about its Western reception.
Well, as you can tell by scanning the currently accumulated Metacritic scores for the handheld gem, Kojima and Co. needn't have worried. In fact, the MGS creator has admitted to being "relieved" at the high scores; so far, Peace Walker has managed to snag a 9.5 from IGN, a 91 from 1Up and GameTrailers, and a 90 from Meristation. We'll be reviewing it as well but for now, it seems obvious that if you own a PSP and aren't considering a purchase of the title in question...you need to have your gamer pulse checked. Perhaps it died off with the recent drought of really top-notch portable experiences but a game like Peace Walker can definitely rejuvenate your desire to have fun on the go. And remember, Konami didn't sacrifice anything in their creation of this new MGS installment; they've often called it "Metal Gear Solid 5" and more of a "true sequel" than the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Rising.
But it's always interesting to see how Japanese developers are worried about the reception their games will receive over here. Hey, we say, if the game is good, what are you worried about?

Lest us not forget the push these quality titles still give the aging PSP hardware, in addition to keeping the PSPGo rendition on life support.
I can only imagine a new generation of handheld from Sony. I am sure it will be powerful enough to have some pretty spectacular MGS versions on it too, probably at double the resolution.
I think there are good times ahead, as long as Sony does not lose the plot :)

Hopefully this doesn't make Konami force Kojima into another psp game.
By the way, he shouldn't worry, it's not like all US v-game websites are horrible. There are certain sites that rate the game well if it's good (psxe, gameinformer, gamepro)

So to actually answer your question, you'll have a great time with MGS4 whether you play the other chapters or not, though to be sure the story is INSANELY convoluted (I think in a good, very fun way) so you won't understand plenty of the ridiculous references made in the game.

It would actually be interesting if you got MGS3, then 1, then 2, then 4. Why? Because MGS3 takes place before all the other MGS games, followed by 1, 2, and 4.

I went out and bought that box set of MGS1, 2 and 3 and played those again before playing MGS4 a second time. I needed to play the other games again to jog my memory. I couldn't follow the the story arch without replaying those older games again and playing MGS3 for the first time. While the MGS story arch is great, its one of the hardest to follow in my opinion. You won't know who a lot of the characters he knows are and why he knows them. They do an okay job of reminding the player with flash backs but i still needed a refresher.
@Scarecrow, then he would need to play Peace Walker after 3 and before 1 because it takes place between MGS3 and 1. :)

I just have a hard time sitting at home playing my psp when my ps3 is right there in front of me. I'm sure I'll get it at some time, but most likely right before a trip so I'll be sure to have time to devote to it.

MGS has become like splinter cell and every other in the genre too much of a action game.
i miss the good old days where every mission had you lurking in the shadows, avoiding laser beams, destroying cameras and playing cat and mouse with your enemies.
todays so called "stealth" games have lost there tension and atmosphere.
conviction was a great game no doubt but it lacked the x factor, the suspense, the finesse other titles were soaked in.

I swear he youtubes videos of games and listens to others gripes and opinions on on other venues, then spews his own view for attention. No wonder he is such a negative Nancy and Debbie Downer. No thought process of his own.

its changed allot!
the first had you dodging laser beams wheres that in MGS4?
the first had you taking out security cameras wheres that in MGS4?
if you were spotted thats it game over start again.
now its oh you were spotted go back and hide for a second than rinse and repeat.
it takes the tension out of the game, yes you can play stealthily but giving the player the choice has taken away the focus of the game.
just like it did in conviction theve made it that you really have to go scrummaging otherwise you wont find.
thats the best part about alpha protocol they give you the choice without taking away the focus.
every level it shows you your choices not like the other 2.
in both i was constantly taking out enemies by using my silencer, but than after thats done i wonder around the room and find a much easier way to clear the room.
thats the problem, yes you can go through stealth but you really have to look for it, dig to the bottomb of the barrel.
where before all you had to do was skim the top.
if it was not for the characters, or the name, you would not know MGS4 is a game of the same genre let alone the same series as the original.

I don''t understand why ALL the developers can use the same control (two analogs) on the PSP (one analog). It's absurd. A LOT of games use that and is useless. I don't know about the PSP2 but, i REALLY hope it has the same use as a DS2 or DS3 and later, after an Update, be able to play a game like this. MGS3 is just the BEST MGS and, to see what happens with Big Boss, is important to play those games but PLEASE, with a good controller. Red 5.

Still interested in purchasing Peace Walker, how is it so far? It is a constant goal and battle to complete every game in my collection and keep up with the games coming out.
Current Games:
FFXIII
GOWIII
GTAIV
Heavy Rain (again, 5th play-through)
And, when I'm done with those I still have to pick up Assassins Creed II and Battlefield Bad Company 2. And after that.. well I've made this list long enough already lol

Most likely not in any order what so ever but feel like I need to start Bio Shock 2 and finish AC 2 before the others, think I burnt myself out on GoW for awhile and now thinking about it I need to finish another play through of Heavy Rain, lol. Still need to buy FF XIII, RDR, SSF4, GTA LCS. And forgot to mention I blew the dust off the Elite, beat Alan Wake in 3 days and haven't even opened ME 2 yet. After I finish that back to being a dust magnet till Gears 3.

Hideo doesn't have nearly as much influence with MGS:R and its not exclusive. I doesn't look like it will be that great. (Now I'm not expecting it to be terrible just not nearly as good as the usual)
Anyway if you have a psp buy piece walker. If not then go buy the bundle. (the green psp looks awesome!)
