Famitsu: Valkyria Chronicles 3 For PSP, ICO, SotC

We were sort of hoping the third Valkyria Chronicles would return to the platform that made it so successful, but it appears it'll stick with Sony's handheld.

Some scans of the most recent Famitsu have hit the Internet and leading the notable features is the listing of Valkyria Chronicles 3 for the PSP. The original was exclusive to the PS3 and the sequel was exclusive to the PSP; many were assuming Sega would at least bring the third title to both the PS3 and PSP, but right now, that doesn't appear to be the case. Famitsu also shed more light on the possibility of a Team ICO Collection, featuring PS2 classics ICO and Shadow of the Colossus remastered in brilliant high-definition for the PS3. The interesting part is that both titles appear to be listed separately - and not part of one package - so we'll have to keep an eye on the situation. We expect all of this to be cleared up this week at the Tokyo Game Show, though, so stay tuned for lots of potentially big announcements. Oh, and The Last Guardian is shown for the PS3 in the magazine, too, but that shouldn't come as any big surprise. All we want now is a release date...

So, how do VC fans feel about VC3 not being available on the PS3? Presumably, the sequel did pretty well on the PSP if the listing is 100% accurate.

Bummer for those who wanted another PS3 iteration. Nice for those who are trying to grow their PSP collection.

Yea though you never know, they can do a multi-platform release right? I don't even know if that is possible without incurring a boat load of extra costs but I'm optimistic.

As for SotC and ICO I am very excited as I've always wanted to play them but never had the opportunity and so I wanted to hold out to see if they would actually release them in an upgraded form. Looks like I have no excuse now!

I borrowed ICO and bought SotC not that long ago. I stopped playing SotC when i heard about the HD collection. Great games. Can't wait to see what they look like in HD.

If they hope to move any copies of Ico they had better include it with SotC. Separating the two would not bode well for shorty.

I don't think you're being fair. ICO sells for over $40 and SOTC is nearly $20. Throw in highdef graphics and PS3 support and I think either is a steal at $40. I think Team ICO deserves the money.

I love Ico, but the only reason it sells for $40 is its rarity.

The game is 6.5 hours long. $40 is too much, even with updated graphics.

Fortunately, it has been announced that the games are packaged together for $40. A must buy if you don't own them already.

Has anyone considered that Sega may well be making more money from VC2? Despite it's greatness, the first just didn't sell very well. And I guarantee that VC2 cost a lot less to make.

I'm with you on that. VC2 sold better as well didn't it? More PSPs than PS3s in Japan by a wide margin, and as you say it costs less to make PSP games. Plus with VC2 being a sequel already, it was able to use some of the assets from game 1, and I'm sure that VC3 will do the same. I think the reason that VC3 is coming to PSP is the very profitability of VC2 on PSP.

That's positively retarded on Sega's part. They keep screwing up this generation for some reason. I would have liked to see the rest of the series but who plays strategy games on a portable? You need decent play times for lengthy battles.

Unless ICO and SoTC are on the same disc I'll probably pass.

VC2 is just as good on the PSP and you can blame PS3 owners for it being on the PSP. Its sales were abysmal.

If they broke up ICO and SOTC onto a dozen disks each priced at $20 I'd still pay for it. Another example of great games not selling enough, they deserve the money!

The first iteration of a game often doesn't sell a ton but it gathers momentum, that is unless you switch platforms.

They both did terrible in sales. ICO didn't sell over 700,000 and you can't really refer to SOTC as the next game in the series (though it is) since few people actually know this and it was never marketed this way.

I was referring to Valkyria. I have a firm stance that spin-offs should go to portables a la Kingdom Hearts and now Parasite Eve and numbered titles should be console based (so long as they began on consoles).

Ah well than my apologies. I agree with you on the whole spin-off thing but VC did piss poor, like ICO numbers piss poor so I'm not surprised that they've chose a cheaper path for the franchise especially since the PS3 version didn't exactly use the systems full potential.

While playing VC2 u sometimes forget you're playing it on a different system.

Well the engine used in VC for the PS3 while snazzy looking was not very "next gen" it reminded me of DragonQuest8. It made the transition to the PSP quite seamless.

If they were making VC3 for the PS3 I doubt they would use a different engine. Again those complaining that VC3 isn't coming to the PS3 must not have a PSP, sucks for you! :)

I have a PSP and PS3. I am so angry at Sega. It felt like when Sony lost a game to Microsoft, except that Sony PS3 lost to Sony PSP. I don't know if I should get mad at Sony. Pissed at Sega though.

I actually understand why Sega would put VC series on PSP from now on.

Mind you, I don't like it, but I can see why. Sales sucked. But PS3 was only starting to take off when the first was released. In fact, now, I have a hard time finding a copy of VC!

As for it being on PSP, I'm a little bummed out. I mean, with battle times, I'm going to be drawing battles out across multiple sessions... which, unless there's a save feature mid game, will shorten battery life leaving the PSP in sleep mode so as not to lose progress.

What the hell? VC2 is not even selling half of what PS3 had. Why did they announce another sequel right after the release of VC2 on the PSP in US? Is developing for an existing engine for PS3 that expensive that they rather rack up less sales and sold for lower price on PSP?

I'd wager it costs a lot less to develop for the PSP... so even if the numbers don't seem as high, the ROI could be considerably better. When it all boils down to it, these guys are in it to make money.

And I'm telling you, all of you. VC2 is really, really good. I'm quite enjoying it.

Valkyria 1 was such a great game, and it belongs to the PS3. NO psp here, no interest, now c'mon SEGA, gives us the sequel we are waiting for, but this time do it on the right plataform!!!

I never said anything about VC2. I just said VC3 should come to the PS3, mostly because I love the original, and i don't have a psp.

And I don't think VC2 will have better sales than VC1, mostly because most of its audience and long time fans are on the PS3. So now that they have done the 2nd for the psp, let the fans from the original get the 3rd.

How in heck are Xbox and Wii cheaper than a PSP? Even at the list prices for a brand new system (in USD) the PSP is cheaper than either of those, and considerably cheaper than a 360 with any HDD included.

Is it that $400 for the PSP the list price, or is that a retailer price?

NOOOOO! But at the same time, HELL YES!

Let me elaborate. The latter of the two cheers first: ICO/SotC collection confirmed. Absolutely can not wait. Even if they are released separately I will do anything I can to track them down.

Now for the 'no': I loved Valkyria Chronicles. I went into the second with huge expectations, knowing that the story wasn't as good as the first, and that there were other minor problems with it, but I have been let down thus far. The switch in design choice to the school is dreadful. I much preferred the focussed nature of the original title. Then you've got the miniscule maps and the cut-out cutscenes. I know that these were also in the original, but they were done with so much more class. Oh well, I'll still get the third, but I doubt I'll be ecstatic about it.

Just read a tad about the game on IGN, and brilliant. It's more like the original. Makes me HAPPY! And makes up a little bit for the second one and the fact that it will be on PSP. I think I'm good for now.

i really do hope the ICO and SOC collection do come out, its looking confirmed so far but nothing is till it comes out of the donkeys mouth.
never got to play either games so im dying to find out what all the fuss is about!

with that said, sony stop pussyfooting around and give us a R&C collection, you know you want to!

Thats too bad about VC 3 being on psp only. I have no need for a psp since when i travel im driving and quite frankly i wouldn't see myself playing a portable console game at home with the exception of pokemon

Well I am a fanboy of the VC games so I dont care what platform it is released on hell I would buy it on ps2, the CONTENT is what makes VC so good so I am a happy bunny, only played VC2 for about 10 hours but it is fecking awesome only thing I hope gets dropped for VC3 is the re using of maps kinda irritating after you have done the same map 6-7 times over :), as for ICO n SOTC good needs indeed.

I'm 100% in support of more Valkyria Chronicles sequels on the PSP. I'm 20+ hours into VC2 and it's great. For people like me this is the perfect PSP game, I love it. I would really like to get another VC title on PS3, and I'm sure it'll happen, but I can wait.

And I really don't care if an ICO and SOTC HD remix come out separately, I'll buy them both! Maybe they're putting more work into it than we saw with the GOW remix's. Maybe they'll floor us with new visuals, who knows? who cares! SOTC in HD is all I need to hear to open my wallet.

I'm 14+ hours into VC2. And I think the second one is even better than the first. But I like more to play my games on the PS3 rather than the PSP. Still I would definitely buy VC3 no mater if it's for the PSP or PS3.

Man, it would be nice to have more VC on the PS3, but since the PSP version looks to have sold better than it's big brother, I can't blame SEGA for sticking with the PSP. Who knows though, perhaps there is still something in the pipeline for the PS3?

While It would be nice if VCIII was on the PS3, I'm not going to fault them for going with the PSP. VCII is fantastic, so this no doubt a D1P for me.

And did any of you see the Yakuza: Of the End? Kiryu punching Zombies in the face! Game of the Year 2011!

On one hand, I like the fact that VC3 will be coming to the PSP because VC2 is awesome. What's not so awesome about the PSP version is the short little anime videos and the animated pictures. I would much rather have the whole cutscene be anime styled and the PSP just can't do that. Well, after playing Birth By Sleep and seeing all that SqueEnix squeezed on a UMD, they can, but chances are that they won't....
