Sony Won't Confirm PlayStation Phone, But Drop Hints...
Might the PlayStation Phone be really, really real? Well, Sony is mum on the subject but SCEA senior vice-president of marketing, Peter Dille, told CNN that the PSP needs to adapt.
Basically, Dille focused on the fact that the PSP isn't "always on;" i.e., it isn't always connected to the Internet...unlike a smartphone and a cellular data network. "The PSP is a Wi-Fi device," said Dille. "People are used to having always-connected devices." He went on to say that the PSP can't "fully realize" the "always-connected vision" as a Wi-Fi device: "If it's not connected then it does sort of limit people." Okay, well, that sounds an awful lot like a phone of some sort. At the same time, Sony understands the PSP is a gaming device, which means a PlayStation Phone would have to be a very different animal.
While smartphones do have games, Dille says those are "largely time-killers" for the owners, and "gamers aren't satisfied with that." No, no they're not. Obviously, Dille wouldn't say anything one way or the other about the rumored PS Phone - all Sony execs abide by their own rules, "we don't comment on rumor and speculation" and "we don't announce anything until there's something to announce" - but his comments are kinda interesting, don't you think?
But with the PSP2 coming soon, is there room in the market for both the new PSP and the PS Phone? Perhaps if they're catering to two different audiences, the Phone won't have to be so game-oriented...

The issue is that Sony, at a corporate level, has seen how rapidly the gaming landscape is changing, and how statistically, most people will own some form of smart phone in the future, with the ability to play games... and very good games at that.
Trust me on this, Ghost of Sparta, whilst excellent, will be equaled on smart phones in the future, it is just time and natural evolution that gaming phones will become similarly powerful as dedicated handhelds platforms.
Gaming phones may never reach PSP2 levels, an HD gaming platform that is rumoured to be as powerful as the 360, but they will give the old PSP a run for its money anyway.
Sony understands they cannot stand idly by and let Apple, Samsung and Windows run away with the market. I am sure Sony have also been interested to see how M$ have integrated Live into Windows 7 phones... and I can BET YOU NOW, they will follow suite with the PSP phone. Its highly probably they will integrate Sony services too, which is a direct copy of what M$ has done with their phone service.
So I think this PSP phone is a knee-jerk "reaction" to what is happening to the market by Sony, rather than a "pro-active" one... again, if just look at the games being sold via iTunes and other platforms... Sony could not ignore this, especially after M$ is pushing gaming hard on smart phones as well... If Sony was not challenged we would not see PSP phone, we would see a PSP2 and a PS4 (down the line), but not a phone. I think Sony's had has been forced... and they are "reacting" to the market shifts.
Also note PSP sales continue to decline as well... rumor talk of PSP2 and now this funny looking phone have not helped.
Rather than being sarcastic, write a comment that I or others can learn from. I feel that would be a better waste of time.

They're going to have to sell that format to people who want a PSP Phone. They need to some how make Minis a must try/have product and upgrade them to compete along side console games.
The Playstation Network is an awesome tool. If they can bring that experience to a phone, with demos, media/movies/tv shows/music, minis/games/playstation licensed games, etc. Then it can be a true gem.
PSP2 can simply be the next generation in hand-held gaming. Where the games are just as amazing as those on the PS3 and play just as well with dual analog sticks included.
The 3DS isn't a DS, just like the DS wasn't a Gameboy Advance, just like the GBA wasn't a Gameboy.
PSP2 isn't the PSP all over again. It's going to have to deliver a better cartridge or, why not, a mini Blu-Ray disc to play games AND movies. The PSP was PS1 PS2 crafted. It's about time we have the PSP2 be crafted out of the PS3.
This can be awesome. I'd get both.

A developer has gone on record saying they are developing for the aforementioned hardware, and they say its a powerful piece of kit. It should have the bandwidth of something like 6x the current PSP. I guess it needs to last another 8 years or so right?
The PSP Phone, is for a different market segment. Not saying games coming out for it will not be good or hardcore enough, but it is for people who are more casual about playing games. If they tried to use it as a dedicated mobile games platform, and they used it for similar game session periods as one may use the PSP today, they won't exactly have much remaining power left to keep the phone alive and use it for just that, making and receiving calls.
The dedicated PSP2 gaming platform will be larger, heavier, and have probably have beefier batteries... it will need it if the rumor of it being similar in power to the 360 is true. I think heat and power issues will no doubt be an issue for Sony, and I think, from what little has been said, they actively working on the power consumption and heat dissipation problems the concept model currently has.
Don't think this PSP Phone is anything like the PSP2... we will see if I am correct in a few months time I guess...

It seems a screen big enough for gaming is hurt by the cons it brings to convenient mobility (sticking it in you're pocket) but vive versa makes for ill visibility. Unless sony makes a retractable LED screen that expands.. hmm..
