Rumor: PSP2 May Be Available By "Middle 2011"
The PSP2 is very likely to launch next year but the big question is, of course...when?
Well, most have assumed we'd see it around the holidays but one source claims the newest PlayStation Portable iteration will release in the middle of 2011. According to Mobile News citing a Japanese news source, the PSP2 will boast features from both the PSP-3000 and PSP Go, and might arrive in the second or third quarter of next year. The information evidently comes from Sony boss Kaz Hirai:
"The handheld is likely to be launched in middle 2011 and new market entry in late 2011. Kaz Hirai, Sony’s PlayStation division boss, recently talked about the portable gaming. Hirai even divulge the features and design that is on PSP2. Hirai revealed that the PSP at this time, both variants of the PSP-3000 and PSP Go, get older and need rejuvenation effort."
This, along with the PlayStation Phone, should be big new gadgets for the Sony brand in 2011. And as the company noted before, they'll have to make a very clear distinction between the PSP2 and new Sony Ericsson PS Phone; they might appeal to different audiences and demographics. And then there are the rumors that say the PSP2 might be powerful enough to run something like Uncharted 3...
We're not quite buying that, but we are interested to see how it all turns out for the new portable.

If the PSP2 does have as much power as a PS3... That would be awesome. I just wonder how they would pull that off without cannibalizing PS3 sales. Maybe Sony could market it as a portable Entrainment device. Bring your Movies, Music and Games anywhere! They need to future proof it so I can see the logic in making it as powerful as possible.
2011 is going to be an interesting year for Sony. An undisputable Exclusive line up and two new consoles. Can't wait.

Anyway, that translation is a little bit garbled. A rejuvenation effort for the 3000 and Go would essentially be a PSP-4000, rather than an entirely new device. By that time, the PSP will already be six years old, and beginning to show its age. An entirely new device is necessary.
A mid-year launch is possible, but I don't think likely. Sure, it immediately heightens the chances of a price cut going into next years holiday season, but to launch it with as little fanfare as Sony seems intent on giving it is wrong. It would be better for them to unveil it, and a good few games for it at E3, and release it after three months worth of heavy hype.
At the same time, I kind of hope that they hold off until the very end of the year so that we can deal with what they're releasing on the PS3 for the rest of the year. Don't want too much overlap.
Peace.

Think of a PSP Go scaled up to slightly larger than a regular PSP to accommodate a bigger screen (5-inch?). Twin Analogs and then below and slightly offset towards the middle of the control area are the two sets of buttons.
If it was a mock up, then it's a high quality one.

It looks pretty nice to me, but the buttons seem just a bit deep.
But I'm sort of wondering when they'll announce it. I mean don't they need to have some sort of gaming conference like E3, TGS, or GDC to unveil that?
So saying it'll come mid 2011 to me would mean that it would happen a bit after E3.

Shadowpal, they don't need an trade show to reveal it. Nintendo didn't use one when they first announced the 3DS. It's just preferable,
as that way it seems to garner more attention. At the same time, I'd rather see the device steal the limelight at its own show.
Peace.

Regarding the PSP2, I don't think this announcement has anything to do with that, it comes too late in the day for that. However, if Sony has fully bought out Toshiba's cell interests, that leaves Sony in an exclusive relationship with IBM so any further work to bring a twin processor PowerXcell 8i package, or some other multi-processor variant, could be carried out far more discretely.

The PSP2 will (I think) be about the size of three Motorola Droids laid side by side, only with rounded ends instead of a rectangular shape, and be about as thick as an existing PSP. *IF* they have gone in that direction, it will allow a battery large enough to power the thing for 4+ hours which has to be the minimum battery life.
At this point, I just want an official picture of the thing, and some kind of confirmation of the specs.

I mainly use my psp for emulation (Gasp! a hacked psp) these days. I havent bought a psp game since God of War because I dont find big, involved games on portables to be very interesting.

That said, I'm open to being amazed by future news on the PSP2 and won't rule out getting one. Also, I can very much see the sense in making separate PSP2/ PSP Phone, for reasons already stated above.

I dont know about the psp phone either. I've stuck with sony ericsson phone for a number of years and have always had poor reception on them. I currently own the xperia mini pro. it is slow and unresponsive, sometimes the call list goes blank before the list pops up. it will be the last sony ericsson phone i get. but knowing me it probably wont as i stick to everything that is sony. just feel with the phones, its an ericsson phone and built and sony slaps their name on it.just hope the same doesn't go for the psp phone?
