NGP: Here Come The Games
It has the tech; it has the glittery appeal. But it should also have the games.
During the worldwide debut of the Next Generation Portable, Sony head Shuhei Yoshida played Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the audience, and there was also a running montage of other titles slated to land on the sleek new hanheld.
They even showed Hot Shots to display the unit's Sixaxis capabilities, and we caught glimpses of Wipeout, Resistance and LittleBigPlanet as well. Hideo Kojima got everyone all excited by showing off Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but he reminded us that he wasn't announcing MGS4 for the NGP; it was just to showcase the device's power and potential. However, he did say he'd unveil something for Sony's new handheld at E3 this year.
What else might be coming? Oh, all sorts of stuff, ranging from Sega's Yakuza series to Activision's mammoth Call of Duty franchise. And here's the list of confirmed titles that are coming to the NGP:
- Broken--Sony
- Call of Duty--Activision
- Dungeon Defenders--Epic Games
- Dynasty Warriors--Koei
- Gravity Daze--Sony
- Hot Shots Golf--Sony
- Hustle Kings--Sony
- Killzone--Sony
- Little Big Planet--Sony
- Little Deviants--Sony
- Lost Planet--Capcom
- Metal Gear Solid--Konami
- Monster Hunter 3rd--Capcom
- Reality Fighters--Sony
- Resistance--Sony
- Smart As--Sony
- Uncharted--Sony
- Wipeout--Sony
- Yakuza--Sega
And that's just for starters. It seems clear that Sony understands the need for great games at the time of this unit's launch, and we certainly appreciate it.

I'm not saying that they've said that's possible.
Also, the games come on a writable flash card, though it may only allow for "official" data (e.g., DLC, saves) to be written to it. If you can use the cards as storage space, that provides extra value.

Wow, that would just be fantastic!!! Like Minis, but with larger AAA titles, download 1 copy of a game from PSN and play it on both PS3 and NGP. If that is supported from day 1, this thing is a must-buy.

Unfortunately, Andrew House commented that digital distribution could become the new primary format for retail purchases. I hope not, given that digitally swapping games is a real hassle when you just want to pick up and go someplace....

Additionally, the Random House dictionary now recognizes that the word "digital" can refer to anything available in electronic format, rather than exclusively referencing the fingers or the display/manipulation of numbers. Just sayin'. :)

If this list gets much more lengthy, this may turn out to be a day one purchase for me!

Love the dual cameras. That opens up the possibility of an Augmented Reality Interface, better known to Heavy Rain fans as ARI.

The final name will include "PlayStation" and "Portable", probably in that order; they just haven't decided whether to go with something like "go" or stick with the number.
If "Move" is any indication of their ability to formulate names, I'd say give them all the time they need and then some and then a little more to be safe.
Still, "Move" is a lot better than "Wii" or "Xbox 360".

As an aside, I am now all kinds of hyped for Fatal Frame Portable. Imagine controlling the camera by actually moving the system around and letting the system's camera detect where you are looking based on the speed and motion of the image. Yeah, you might be spinning in circles in your living room, screaming like a little girl while you cling desperately to your PXP/NGP/whatever they call it, but I can't help but feel that game would be awesome on so many levels!

But still, and I thought the 3DS had awesome line-up.
The next handheld battle is gonna be interesting, especially when both are launching not far away from each other
Here's something I got from YouTube.

there appealing to a totally different audience!
why do you think they have not bothered with high powered devices?
their audience is not interested in amazing graphics, there more interested in fun games.
only wish sony would take a leaf from their book!
give me a crap looking but fun game over a technological marvel but boring as bat sh*t one any day of the week!

all ninty fans want are mario and DK sequels, tis why all the new IPs have sold so poorly on the system!
sonys fan base on the other hand want both new games, and old ones.
i just wish they would bring some of the old series back like crash or syphon filter or J&D or spyro or sly cooper.
apparently sly 4 is not a ps3 game but a NGP launch title.
:(
and i thought my favorite thevious raccoonious was finally coming home!

Jak and Daxter is probably another strong possibility. Naughty Dog did say that they would love to make another Jak and Daxter game.
I wouldn't hold my breath for Crash Bandicoot. Currently Activision owns that IP. They recently laid off all of the people at Radical Entertainment who were working on a new Crash game. And the remaining employees at Radical have their hands full with Prototype 2. Yet another reason to dislike Activision.
The Spyro IP is also currently owned by Activision so I wouldn't hold my breath for that one either.
As for Syphon Filter. To the best of my knowledge no one has heard a peep from that franchise in over three years. And Sony Bend is currently working on the NGP Uncharted game. I myself have fond memories of Syphon Filter and would welcome a return of the IP. But I'm not really sure if there is enough demand for it to make it happen.

Seriously, a console could have 4,000 games and only 1,000 decent ones, another console could have 1,500 games and still have 1,000 decent ones. Quantity does not lead to quality - as the mountain of Shovel ware on both the Wii and DS has shown .
