Sony Will Re-Release Some PSP Games For the NGP

Think you know everything there is to know about the Next Generation Portable's capabilities? Not quite.

When Sony announced their sleek new handheld, they said that certain downloadable PSP games could be re-downloaded to the NGP when it arrived. But they didn't mention anything about backwards compatibility; most have assumed it won't be possible, as the NGP won't support UMD. However, according to Andriasang citing Japanese blog Gigazine, Sony has said they do plan to re-release select PSP UMD titles on the NGP's flash-based data cards. At the same time, rights issues may prevent some games from making the leap, so don't think you'll be able to replace your entire PSP collection. As for those with big UMD libraries, Sony is currently seeking possible solutions; all they'll say is more PSP titles will be launched on the PlayStation Store. That, of course, is a way of making such games available on multiple devices.

You may remember that this was a topic of discussion regarding the UMD-less PSP Go but despite similar hopes by Sony, they never offered UMD transfers or some sort of voucher system. Right now, there are no plans to present handheld fans with a UMD reader device for the NGP, but there is one important difference between the NGP and the PSP Go: Sony has long since admitted the latter was more of an experiment than anything else; a way of gauging consumer's interest and level of "acceptedness" in certain elements of portable entertainment.

Therefore, they may indeed find a way to make the transition from the PSP to the NGP a less painful one for handheld aficionados. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't see how you will be able to not have to re-buy the games you have on UMD without Sony releasing some kind of UMD reader that they already said they have no plan to.

Imo, it is a slap in the face to the loyal who do have huge libraries of UMD's, however I realize that with any technology adopting it comes with a price when it becomes sub-obsolete, and I understand that I am not forced to buy this new device. Still, I wish they did adopt some sort of voucher system.

This is what worries me about all 32 of my current PSN downloaded full games. When the PS4 comes out, will I be able to transfer all those games to the PS4 or am I S.O.L. with that?

To many ways to cheat a voucher system... Looks like the best choice is to not sell your PSP and keep it to play your UMDs.

Hanging onto an old PSP doesn't seem too much of a chore really, especially as games now release simultaneously on UMD and PSN. So the impact of this should be limited primarily to older games.

I don't get why it just wouldnt be able to be fully backwards compatible, sure rerelease some on flash if they like but we should be able to play our old psp games on it straight away, by transferring off our computer. Some of us have actually launched straight into buying digital even without a go like me.

All downloaded PSP games are fully backwards compatible with the NGP.

What they war talking about is some how making a way for playing UMD games on it without having to re-buy a digital version of it.

Seems like they are saying by implication that the NGP will be 100% software backwards compatible because downloaded games will work. But, because there is no UMD drive, it's clearly not media compatible with UMDs. That was to be expected though.

Frankly, Sony has been pushing downloadable games pretty hard on the PSP since the PSPGo and before. I made that switch because I figured that UMD was dead outside the original PSPs.

It's not really much of an issue for me, as I will be keeping my PSP.

At least you can go digital, unlike PS2 games on the PS3.

They should let people take their UMDs in to a Sony store and trade them in for a digital copy. They can link it to your PSN account right there in the store so it wouldn't be hackable (no user interaction at all). They could sell the used UMDs then if they wanted to.

Or perhaps work out a sort of deal with all games retailers which would allow owners to go in and pay a small fee (<$5) to get the game on the new media form.

Isn't there a code on each UMD that's unique to that specific UMD? Sony could let you punch in that code on the PSN, just like you punch in vouchers and gift cards, and bam! you can go to your account and download the game. Of course not every UMD game will move to digital, unfortunately, but at least for the ones that do, people won't have to re-buy them.

Great idea,

But also, the stores need to put them on small memory cards or flash devices, so that way we collectors still have something tangible to hold & to look at.

Especially since our UMDs were, are now, and always will be......100's of times more valuable than any DL's will ever be.

It would be a really good idea if there was a way to transfer umds to the ngp. It doesn't really matter to me, as I just traded my psp and all my games for a lgames. What this means for me is i'll be able to get the god of war collection 2 with support for 2 sticks and even better graphics. I only played the first one, cuz I didn't wanna buy a full priced psp game when I knew the psp2 was right around the corner. So this makes me happy. Also I hope for a ffvii remake.. crisis core that is cuz the real one will never ever happen.

It would be nice if they did have some kind of voucher system but until I know all the full details and what games will be put onto the new flash based cards I will be keeping my original PSP and my entire library which isn't that large. Thank God.

At some point we just have to accept that our media is outdated and move on. I'll be okay with keeping my PSP for old games just as I kept my PS2 for non-bc games.

Given how many people rebought PS1 classics for games they already have on disc I don't think Sony is in for a great deal of hate if some titles just can't make the transition.

Maybe Sony can work a way to connect the PSP to the NGP (Ad-hoc, wifi) and "install" to the NGP from the PSP's UMD drive.
It's wishfull thinking, right?

The biggest problem I can think of is that all the UMD games were made to be played with only 1 nub, weren't they???.

So now that the NGP has 2 nubs, won't that mean every UMD game would have to be reworked to just to be able to play it correctly on the NGP?????

Or could Sony just firmware the NGP to change the UMD's to a new 2 nub setting???

How does adding a stick force a change in the control scheme? Yes, it could be done to improve the controls, but the existing control scheme would work just like on the PSP.

I had a bunch of UMD's but sold them to a friend since I knew that UMD wasn't going to happen for the next psp so I'll just download whatever they bring out. just give me GOW, KH,UC and a few others and I'm good to go :)

Hopefully in the future they won't remove this feature like they did with the ps3. This will be awesome, however I don't want to pay again for psp games, since I would rather use my own psp to do that. Another question is what kind of storage is this capable of 16 gb like the psp go or uses something like ms pro duo like psp?

UMD drive has nothing to do with it, most PSP games are already on the store!
this kinda reminds me of the software which was suppose to come with the go.
sony, remember when you said if you buy a go you will be able to download digital versions of your UMD games?
yea, what ever happened to that!?
yet another promised feature, never delivered.

They never advertised the game exchange program, it was simply rumored before launch. I suspect that they might have come up with something if the Go had been a roaring success.
