Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection Dated

Back in the original PlayStation days, we got the Final Fantasy Anthology and Final Fantasy Chronicles. Now, the PSP is getting another FF collection.

Square-Enix has announced a North American launch date for Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP: April 19, 2011. Twenty years after it first released, gamers will get a chance to play both FFIV and its little-known sequel, The After Years. Including bonus game features along with the classic, old-school role-playing experience we all love(d), it's great for portable fans. Here's what to expect:

  • Complete package of one of the greatest RPGs of all time: First packaged release of THE AFTER YEARS
  • An epic tale spanning nations, worlds and generations: Brand-new stories to further expand the revolutionary story line of FINAL FANTASY IV
  • All-new cast of friends, family and foes: Fall in love with Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Rydia and Edge again while getting to know Ceodore and a whole new cast of characters
  • Vibrant visuals and unforgettable melodies: Includes all-new 2-D graphics designed for the PSP® system's 16:9 format. Also includes a new arrangement of one of the most acclaimed video game soundtracks of all time!

Oh, and we're sort of excited for those "never-before-seen" levels, too. We may never see this type of gameplay again but that doesn't mean it has to disappear forever, right?

Wow this is great! I see heaps of members on here all the time saying how IV was their favourite. Although not personally mine, it's still a great Final Fantasy. Better than the Final Fantasy I/II Anthology they released on PSP anyway... Those games haven't aged well...

I'll probably have to put Suikoden on hold to play this (if the price is right). I've been itching to play FFIV for a while, and now I'll have a great chance at playing it remastered on my preferred jRPG platform.

Sorry but I have to pass, I did actually overplay FFIV. Can't do it again. When is SE gonna be done fooling with the old ones and get around to the newer games.

I mean, if they are too retarded to remake FFVII then just remaster all the games and spinoffs into HD and release them on a single Blu Ray (Yes even the crappy ones just to be thorough) and call it FFVII: Crisis Complete.

An HD remake of the same game? How can you screw it up? It's just remodled sprites...

Fair enough. FFVI was a pretty insane classic! Storyline and battle system wise, it's up near the top all time for me as well. Not just the FF franchise, but in all of video games.

If they can manage to only update graphics, or at the very least, leave the story and battle system the same, I'd be a happy panda.

This kinda makes me angry lol.

It's maddening seeing them release this great collection and then looking at the crap they're gonna release (FFXIII-2 and Versus).

Yes I'm not a big Versus fan

But this also proves how important it is to buy yourselves a psp/NGP

Think you'll get Versus if it scores well, or is it a personal distaste for something about it? (Besides the obviously gay leader death equals party death)

Character designs are so....I don't know generic?

Then there's also the gameplay, King Hearts?....................

it's not really FF to me. FF is big summons, BIG worlds, a 6-8 party, and lots of customization.

Well we are getting some kind of summons and the world seems large but who can say now? After the killtubes its hard to have faith but im hopeful.

I prefer the 4 character battles but at least we know there will be lots of characters playable in your party besides noctis and his 2 pals.

I'm in the "overplayed" boat too. It was my second FF as a child (thanks for that Nintendo) and I damn near OD'd on the thing. Every waking moment was dark knight this and paladin that. Everyone thought I was crazy. But NOW who's laughing?

Well, ok, they still are. But now the damn Complete Collection is coming so who cares?

I hope it comes as download on PSN for the new NGP, cos I traded in my PSP and all my games not long ago.

I didn't get into FF until FF VII on PS1. Didn't have a Super Nintendo, but a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis).

After playing FF II on PSP, it was fun, but I wasn't as wowed by the gameplay or anything as I was with FF VII. Just personal taste.

Lucky S-E have got their back catalogue to fall back on cos their new games kinda suck.

Does anyone know what company all the old FF developers are working under now? I'm looking forward to seeing what they do. S-E should maybe start making CG cinema release films, they're clearly great at that, just a shame they keep simplifying gameplay to dumb down the RPG elements for the CoD masses. I bet those CoD zombies have never touched an FF in their lives.

Nathan Fillion from Firefly. The guy who we all want to play Drake in the Uncharted movie, but instead got stuck with the short and stubby Mark Wahlberg.

Its not fair to judge FFIV based off of what you played in FFII. Way different in my opinion. The story in IV is pretty darn good. And the battle system is unforgettable. Give it a shot. Nothing beats Final Fantasy VI on the SNES though.

FF IV has always been one of my favorite FF's, didn't know about the after years tho. I already own the PS1 collection, but if this has content I've never played I'll have to get it eventually.

I'm currently playing Wild ARMS for the first time, after that 2 and 3, love me some classic turn based gameplay.

Wild ARMS is a lot of fun. The second one was pretty bad in my opinion. Third one redeemed itself though.

I'm thinking of buying a PSP, partially for the games that I want to play(KH BBS, Crisis Core, LocoRoco2, Patapon, etc.) and partially as an mp3 player. You can get a brand-new 3000 on Amazon for $130 and 16gb M2 sticks with adapters are around $30. I know a fair bit about the NGP, and I'm not interested in super-expensive device at launch and there are still a bunch of psp games that I want to play that aren't on the PSN.
So, in summary, would you guys recommend buying a PSP at this point in the console's life-span?

Personally, at that price, if there are games you want to play that are on UMD? Yes. But I would carefully consider every disc purchase and make sure that the game isn't available on PSN and isn't going to become available that way. With a decent size memory stick you can keep a lot of downloadable games and music - and pictures on the device.

Of course the NGP will be here later this year and probably cost 2-3 times the amount a PSP goes for now. So there are pluses and minuses. If you can be happy with the functionality that PSP brings now, and there are games on UMD you want, then there is very little reason to worry.

AbsoluteZer0,
If you're going get a PSP 3000, take it from someone who has 30 years experience looking for bargain basement sales on gaming stuff.

If you can hold out for a while, then just be patient until just before or after the NGP comes out & watch all the prices drop on the 1000's, 2000's, & 3000's.

And if you don't mind buying a used one, just watch how fast they drop in price at Gamestop, or on eBay, 1/2 dot com, Amazon, Craigslist & all other other used sites once all the used PSP's start to flow in.

Plus some of the UMD prices should drop too.

That's exactly what I'm going to be doing to add to my PSP collections.
I'll be snatching up all the colored PSP's found that I don't have yet. Plus I hope to make a big dent in all the games, movies, & music UMDs still needed to boost my UMD collections.

@Highlander,
Thanks, there are several games that I would really like to play that don't look like they're coming to the PSN, I.E. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. I'm just not ready to jump on the new handheld console bandwagon yet. While the tech and developer support for the NGP look great, it's still not going to be out for at very least 'till September, and is going to cost a fairly larger amount more than the PSP does. I also like to have a reasonable number of games to choose from when I buy a system and neither the 3DS or the NGP seem to promise me games, at least ones specific to their hardware, in large enough quantities for me to justify their respective purchases. Also I've been thinking about buying a PSP for a while now and still really want to. Really, I was just wondering if the folks here at PSXE had any qualms about the PSP that I should know about as far as portable media(outside of games) goes. And I definitely plan on buying games on the PSN as much as possible, I already have LittleBigPlanet and one or two other games from having previously owned a PSP go.

All new PSP games are simultaneously released on PSN and UMD. Unfortunately there were some games that launched around August-October 2010 that didn't quite make it into that situation.

Incidentally try looking up Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix, it's an "international version" released in Japan this year that includes all the updated content and fixes from the western release. All PSP games in japan release digitally as well as on UMD, so if that version includes the English voice acting and menus, perhaps it will eventually appear on the US PSN? I have no idea how we could find that out however. LOL! Sounds great until you try to confirm it huh?

@Highlander,
I do believe that the Final mix was released with voice acting in English; however, I'm pretty sure that all the menu's are still in Japanese. This might not actually be such a bad thing, since I want to learn Japanese.
