Sony Planning A 2011 NGP Launch For North America

Update: We've just been informed that the initial Lazard report was inaccurate, and although the firm will release an official clarification tomorrow, here's a new statement from SCEA-

"Executives reconfirmed that the NGP will begin a phased launch rollout beginning at the end of 2011."

Original Story:

It has always been a question since the unit was announced: will the Next Generation Portable (NGP) launch in the U.S. this year?

After some confusion due to the recent crisis in Japan, Sony has confirmed the disaster hasn't changed their Japanese launch projection for the PSP's successor. Furthermore, it seems Sony has been telling analysts that the slick new handheld will indeed release in North America in 2011. Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian said SCEA reps "reconfirmed" the U.S. launch for this year. He also had a few comments about the unit itself; after praising its "cutting-edge GPU and CPU," he said price may still be a barrier for potential consumers. He also thinks the new smartphones on tap may prove to be stiff competition, even though the NGP is designed specifically for gaming.

Finally, Sebastian delivered a few updated statistics: Sony reports that there are now 75 million PlayStation Network accounts, which is a significant leap from the 60 million registered in January. Also, they say 1.4 billion pieces of content have been downloaded from the PSN all told. ...that's a lot of content.

Sweet. Would be nice if it was summer release so I could take it with me when I go to Europe but it will probably arrive in time for Christmas.

So last night I went to Best Buy and I finally got a hands on shot at the 3DS. And while I only tried Pilot Wings (I did love that game on N64) it was enough to get an idea of the 3D effect and a rough estimate of the visuals. The 3D screen was pretty nice, a bit fickle with where you held your eyes, but it was very clear and crisp once you're aligned right. Overall, I have to say, it was pretty darn underwhelming for $250.
If the NGP is anywhere near that price, I think a reasonable sized portion of 3DS owners are going to feel pretty ripped off.

Funny, for just $49 more, you can get a 3D machine, Blu-ray player, video streamer, hi-def video game machine with motion control support and hundreds more and better games to choose from.

For those still deciding, which sounds better?
PS3 or 3DS for nearly the same price?

You guys should remain cautious with your views on the 3DS; it's always the software that defines the hardware, so as of now, the 3DS is indeed underwhelming.

However, don't be surprised at the 3DS later on when it really hits its stride. Say what you will about past Nintendo products, but it's a fact that once those products hit their stride, their tails ended up pretty long (especially in the sales department).

Also, I don't want to see the same trend happen to the NGP, like with the PSP did before its launch; critics and gamers alike praising the PlayStation handheld while showing significant doubt (and also hatred) towards the Nintendo rival, only for the Nintendo rival to dominate the charts in the end when we inevitably anticipate the next generation of handhelds.

I don't want to let that happen to the NGP, I wants its sales in the end to either beat or nearly match the 3DS's. Lastly, every time I look at the PSP's sales, I always go "75 Million is no feat to be criticized, at all, but it should've done better".

The 3DS is just a beefed up DS. While I don't mind the DS (it's offered far more REAL RPGs this gen. than anything else out there) I don't really consider it anywhere close to what is possible with the NGP.

Its more than a beefed up ds dood... They are worlds apart. Like N64 vs Wii+. I know NGP is going to be a beast but 3DS is still showing nice graphics so far. I own one with SSF and Pilotwings. Got to say on that small screen SSF looks just like on my PS3 but in 3D with new modes and FINALLY a online rematch option lol. I plan on buying ngp day one too anyway :D

How are the worlds apart? both use two ARM CPUs and a GPU. The 3DS is faster than the DSi, but at heart, it's a scaled up DS with a extra high resolution (horizontal resolution) screen with a 3D optical filter to simulate 3D.

Sounds like a souped up DS to me. Oh, BTW, if you think that the street fighter graphics on the 3DS look the same as the do on PS3 only better because they are in 3D, you need glasses.

I recommend www.pspicy.com for any PSP owners, it's really cool. Lots of Flash applications, Flash games, and a YouTube downloader, MP4 search, Forums viewable straight through the PSP's browser. It's really handy. The applications can actually be saved as an Offliine Bookmark and used with no internet, there are calculators, calendars, and a lot of other handy stuff. There was even an application for fixing dead pixels it would flash the screen for a while with a lot of different colors and it did work for me.

And what is a the NGP? a beefed up PSP? In the case of the 3DS, at least its actually giving gamers a newer way to experience videogames with the incluson of 3D as standard as oppose to the NGP just being souped up PSP have.

What Kiryu said.

The 3DS adds in the 3D effect, Sixaxis controls and a better processor.
The NGP adds in Augmented Reality, two cameras and a microphone as standard, Sixaxis controls and two touchscreens... Yeah, I really do wonder which one is a bigger jump over its predecessor. Admittedly, the DS already had one touchscreen, a microphone and two cameras, but Sony has added even more to that.

Seriously, the NGP is a far more advanced piece of kit from the PSP, while the 3DS is a DS with a couple of extra bells and whistles.
Peace.

With the strength of our dollar, you'd think that the price of most all imported goods would be cheaper, but apparently the economy doesn't work that way. I can understand the price of living and local goods and services remaining steady, or even increasing, but it is strange that nothing really ever gets cheaper... Not looking for an economy debate (definitely not my strong suit), just making an observation.

i cant believe how much cheaper especially electronics are there!
one thing i cant understand about sony is they shoehorn us with europe, where we actually use the same region code as Asia, and were allot closer to them.
why are we seeing releases, and pricing based off SCEE and not SEEJ?
i really wish the NGP would release this year!

Man, it seems like you're being hit by the same crap that plagued the UK for decades. Sony finally pegged the price in Europe to the Euro/dollar rate, so the UK price is based on the Pound/Euro rates and of course the addition of VAT...

Still, I hate the way that all electronics (and other types of goods) get priced in Dollars(US) and then companies sell those same products elsewhere at inflated prices either by simply exchanging the currency symbol - as was done for years with the pound making things up to twice the price of the same exact thing in the US. Or by using an outdated currency rate and never updating it to reflect increasing parity, or even worse, simply setting the price higher and claiming it reflects local market conditions - which seems to be the bull-crap excuse you get in Australia and New Zealand.

I wonder how much better it would be if we simply did away with national currencies and had a single global unit of money? Oh, wait, it wouldn't, because of that bullcrap 'local market' excuse.

Sometimes......*sigh*

There's no point getting angruy, it won't change anything.

It would be impossible to change to a uniform currency at this time in the world , in this economic climate especially. It's like wanting to switch to a universal language, you take a little bit of culture away from the people either way. Not to mention the fact that if a country spent the money wrong the whole value would be affected. That would also mean all countries involved putting their gold in one stockpile to support it, which obviously no country is going to get rid of their safety net. It's completely not feasible for more than a lousy excuse, it's a legitimate problem that could not be solved unanimously. Not to mention the fact that all of the banks piles of cash would be worthless and the re-structuring would take decades.

i only wish we could have a universal currency.
id be ok if it was currency conversion plus taxes ect, but its not.
cars and watches are really bad too.
when we landed in Hawaii last december the air port had a tag hure shop, a friend bought a watch there for 20K USD.
during the 2 weeks we were there we checked heaps of stores, they were pretty much in the same price.
once we got back here, out of curiosity we went to the tag hure shop in the city, and they wanted 50K for it!
FIFTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
double, and then some!
pretty disgusting were having to pay double, just because of where we live.

or even the TV that i bought, the HX800 46 inch.
i started looking here just before we left, everyone here was selling it for 2800 thats the lowest i could barter.
sears in Hawwai though i haggled with the guy and got him down to 1250.

then the government wonders why our tourist industry is down the sh*tter!
no one comes here because it costs a bomb!
believe it or not, but its cheaper to go on a holiday in Europe then it is here!
my aunti came down from italy 2 years ago, she stayed with my nan for a month had her food provided and everything, but she still managed to spend 40K.
my cuz went over to italy 12 weeks after she left here, he stayed at her place again had food provided, and spent 25K!
unbelievable how expensive things are here!

The NGP is a serious upgrade to the PSP, and if it's $250-$300 I'll be picking it up on day one! The 3DS is outdated tech with a 3-D screen at a premium price. From what I've seen on the specs for the 3DS it's about as powerful as PSP for $250?

It's funny how Nintendo keeps taking people too the bank for outdated tech. I'll be holding out for a real next generation gaming system!

The thing about the 3DS is that it's an upgraded DS with a higher resolution top screen and an optical filter to make 3D work. But the DS itself was so outdated it was painful, it had the touch screen thing, but apart from that, it was literally a decade past it's prime - technologically. The 3DS offers an updated DS with a semi-modern screen. It's seen as innovative, but the 3D technology in the 3DS is actually fairly old, and the hardware is much better than the old DS, but still not really pushing any kind of envelope.

If you broke down the devices to their basic computer components and looked at the raw performance, the DS was utterly outclassed by the PSP. the new 3DS is faster than the PSP, but not by a massive margin. Essentially, the 3Ds catches up to the PSP. PSP has twin MIPS32 R4000 CPUs running at 333MHz, and a custom GPU running at 166MHz. The 3DS has twin ARM 11 (old design) CPUs running at 266MHz, and a GPU running at 166MHz. The 3DS has 64MB of RAM - as does the PSP (though the PSP-1000 only has 32, and games are limited to 32MB with the other 32MB used for a disc cache).

Either way, it's amazing to me that people are willing to plunk down $250 on the 3Ds when it barely catches the 5 year old PSP hardware, and the 3D screen is as cheap as chips anyway. Basically, Nintendo could have priced this below $200 and still make a profit.

The NGP will wipe the floor with the 3Ds in hardware terms. Good grief, the NGP may actually be more powerful than the WiiHD - seriously, I'd actually bet on it.
