Rumor: NGP Will Receive Official Name Of "PS Vita"

Hoax? Maybe. Cool name? ...well, that's up to you guys. I really have no comment one way or the other.

According to various sources, Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) will be officially named the "PS Vita," and will likely be a big part of Sony's E3 press conference next week. The latter is likely true, but what about that "PS Vita?" Well, it started on the personal blog of Hugo Miramontes and spread to other sources, some of which supposedly found updates to help verify the name claim. Now, we're not going to post any link because the info is gone; Miramontes took everything down and posted up an apology:

"This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever done. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry. I really am."

That could mean anything, really. It could mean he leaked something he shouldn't have and Sony reprimanded him, or he put it up as a joke and it exploded on the Internet, which he didn't expect would happen. Either way, let's not forget that "Vita" was a name we saw associated with the PSP's successor before the NGP was officially unveiled.

Take from that what you will...

I'm not that keen on the name, if it is officially going to be called "Vita". I mean, it doesn't have that ring to it like what existing PlayStation gaming devices have. PS3, PSP, PS Move all can be said easily. But PS Vita? Would they call it PSV? Hmmm...

Anyway, I think I'd get used to it eventually but I'm still hoping for a better, cooler name for NGP.

NGP seems more suitable if you ask me, I don't mind if they use that name for it.

Vita doesn't suit it in my opinion.

@World, At a Sony event in NY one of the reps went into how Qriocity may evolve. They are referring to the music service as Q Music (As in Que Music) versus Qriocity Music Unlimited. That was a mouthful.

I can just imagine those meetings when they brainstorm names of products and services. Vita?

Yeah, they're kind of all over the place with their names... More so nowadays. Walkman made sense. So did CyberShot. PS makes sense as does Move, the Xperia Play is... yeah. But then you've got the Bravia, the rumoured S1 tablet. Some of their marketing team have to be on crack or something... But I still prefer most of those names to Project Natal/Kinect/Project Cafe/Wii.
Peace.

Guys this name does make perfect sense. In Latin this would translate to PlayStation Life. And for a device promising to connect us to every part of our PS Lifestyle at all times it becomes a very fitting name indeed. It does make sense, I think you all are just taking it at face value, same with Qriocity. I mean yes the Que Music part along with it being a Cloud music program, if you are curious search a song and listen to it. These names do have meaning I believe you guys are overlooking, that being said I think they are quite clever and understandable. I mean look at the Wii and tell me SONY sucks at naming products.

PSP2 is too gstandard, and also makes it sound a little dated. too long, something new and catchy would grab more newcomers than psp2 imo.
for those already interested it wouldnt make much difference but you wanna get more newcomers on board, something new and catchy.
Vita is a step in the right direction, just its a bit stupid.

Noooo stick to ps4, dont change what aint broke, everyone knows ps2, ps3, so you say ps4 and people would instantly know what youre talking about.
Giving it a new name would mean a whole load more advertising.
Word of mouth is a great advertiser and PS4 would sell itself by name. everyone would know.

'dude seen the ps4?'
'nooo, gotta check that?!'

'dude seen the *generic slightly catchy new name here*?'
'wtf is that?'
'essentially the ps4'
'ohhh, yeah ill totally check it'

essentially the ps4?
why not just make it the ps4?

They'd be stupid to name the ps4 anything but ps4.

The reason they may not go with PSP2 is because it doesn't sound new, we are in the generation of the ps3 and 360, PSP2 can make it sound like old tech. Personally I really don't care what it is called as long as it's a quality device.

It should probably be closer to the Brits' short i sound (like "sit"), since the vowel after the "t" is an "a", but the "ai" sound (like "pie") has no justification.

None of which stops me from saying it incorrectly, just like everyone else.

The NGP is supposed to share a number of integration features with the PS3/PS4 and PSN. It's a mobile companion devices for the PlayStation user. So, let's call it the PlayStation Portable Companion - the PSP-C.

Why not the PSN: Playstation Nuova (Sorry, I'm just trying a Dante reference)? In all honesty, I'm not against the name, but would I be proud to say that I have a PSV... probably not. That being said, the NGP needs to be renamed, and I feel that the PSP2 isn't really an option. It just sounds unwieldy to me, or something.

How about the Playstation Freedom or PSAnywhere? I know, p*ss-poor suggestions, but I'm not a marketing exec, and thank goodness for that!

Because... NGP offers a disconnect from the PS branding, and that is almost essential for this device to gain any market share. You have to remember how many pies Sony have their fingers in to realise that to not have the PS brand as a part of title could be an extremely bad move.

I agree I would be happy with the PSP2. Still I prefer it over the NGP, I won't lie purely because it has 'PS' in the title. NGP just sounds completely unrelated.

To be honest I wont be getting it for a while anyway, I'm happy with my PSP with its exclusives and PS1 games, It will take a lot to encourage me to buy one, more than simple PS3 ports.

Guys this name does make perfect sense. In Latin this would translate to PlayStation Life. And for a device promising to connect us to every part of our PS Lifestyle at all times it becomes a very fitting name indeed.

Just call it NGP, we're already used to saying it. If you're gonna bail out on that name go back to PSP2. I will never refer to it as Vita... never. I don't care what the 'official' name is, I'll always refer to it as PSP or NGP.

I feel bad for Sony if this is actually true.

We'll just have to wait for E3. I hope they come up with something different. They only have two weeks!!!!

If Sony's not going to call it the PSP2, there are certainly better names for it than just Vita.

And since Sony wants to make the NGP their rising shooting star anyway, then why not just call it "PSP NOVA"

Chevy tried that; it's a no-go for Spanish-speaking countries.

;P

Fane1024,
I know they did, I had a midnight blue metallic '64 Nova SS, w/ factory zig-zagged pattern 3-speed automatic.
Damned sweet fast little car, but that year model's front-end suspension really sucked.

OK, then still in keeping with that Vita sounding theme, then how about just adding an "L" to the end of it & calling it the "PSP VITAL, as in "this PSP's Vital to own"?

Why not just PSP2?! Vita just doesn't fit there.
