E3 2011: Vita Priced, Will Release This Holiday Season

It's what we've been waiting for: the price!

After a lengthy PlayStation Vita presentation - which was most impressive, by the way - Kaz Hirai has revealed that this fancy new portable will be available "this holiday season." Also, the two prices: the wi-fi only model will retail for $249.99 and the 3G-enabled version will have a $299.99 price tag. That's not bad, especially considering the technology involved and the prices are also competitive with the Nintendo 3DS. This is one of those items that the gadget-lovers and gamers are going to love, and you can bet that it'll be huge when it arrives. Plus, with over 80 games currently in development from all sorts of designers and studios, the Vita should be well supported. The question is- how interested are you? Gonna get one?

And by the way, that's it for Sony's press conference. Indeed, it was all about the games.

No word about media or RAM, yet, though I'm assuming these details have been elaborated upon to the 150 studios who have signed on, already.

I'm surprised that they didn't show off any third party games for the system. That also has to remind you that everything that you just saw for the Vita comes from Sony studios. But with 80 games in development for the system, I can't freakin' wait to see what else is lined up.

I thought it was pretty solid overall. The Uncharted 3 trailer and gameply got me all jazzed up, as did the Resistance 3 footage. Starhawk trailer impressed, Dust 514 looked interesting, and I'm glad we got some more information about the HD remakes. And Sly 4 was also announced. And Vita impressed me with some of the features and I LOVE the price. Modnation Racers looks fantastic.

Overall I'd say they were maybe 1 or 2 big exclusive announcements from a perfect showing, but I was happy.

Solid, but unsurprising, except for the PSV price(s). That was the only "wow" moment of the show.

Speaking of which, for only $50 extra, I'll likely be getting the 3G version, so long as there's no mandatory contract. Then I'll be good to go if I ever get 3G service.

Several things occurred that kinda brought the show down. Don't get me wrong, it was still impressive, far more than MS' show, but there were a few dampeners:

1. The apology at the start of the presentation and Jack stating that Sony has been humbled by the continued devotion throughout. Almost brought a tear to my eye.

2. Kobe Bryant and Ken Levine making an appearance was pretty cool, but paled compared to Gabe Newell taking the stage last year.

3. No Kevin Butler appearance!!! Seriously?!?!

So a great presentation and a massive load of exclusive content to please gamers throughout the year, but less surprises and the sombre mood after the apology made things less exciting compared to last year.

OK look, before the witch hunt starts about the pricing. The Vita is more powerful than any iPad or iPhone out there. It's a 3G device that uses full broadband bandwidth. It will require a real 3G data plan. Millions upon millions of people think nothing of spending hundreds buying their iPad or iPhone that is encumbered by a two year AT&T contract running between $35 and $50 a month. So please, let's not pretend that the 3G should somehow be completely free or that the price is a bad one. It's not. Nor is it out of the ordinary for a 3G device like this - again look at devices like the iPad.

Personally, I may buy a 3G model, but not go with a data plan just yet.

You pick up the PSP1000 model and tell me you don't feel like your holding a genuine quality device cut straight from a block of obsidian. The thing just extruded premium quality and it sure took a beating from the younger me. The build quality and material chosen for later models really stuck with me as I found the 2000 and 3000 models to be lacking that real heft associated with great build quality.

No its not because Nintendo making 100% profit from it. To further add they have alot of room to do a targeted price drops which in turn would put alot of pressure on Sony and force them into a price war.

In the case of this, obvious that Sony is taking sizabe loss in effort for marketshare, so the real winner is Nintendo.

Not if Sony manages to grab the consumers, which they should be able to do if they can get the games pumping, because the price point is perfect.

A price war would hurt Sony for sure, but if they have the demand, they won't need to worry about lowering the price to keep up with the 'competition'.

To be honest, if Nintendo is making a profit on 3DS units, then they are insane. They should have priced the 3DS lower - if they could. Now they look like fools as Sony brings a state of the art handheld to market at the same price.

I can play that new Uncharted game on psv and then play it on ps3 when I'm home? Same with modnation and lbp?

That seals it for me.

TO be honest I really don't mind the name now.
But still I like the pricing just as much as a ps3 for the 3G version.

if i have the money ill buy it day one for sure. i think the price was reasonable it was a price that most people where hoping for. only problem is i dont see why they went with Att i can assume Att is cheaper on the 3g contract i dont have them so i dont know for sure. Verizon should of been the carrier its alot better in newtwork coverage. hopefully vita works out cause i hate to see another psp go problem with it not selling as well as it should of been.

I'm sad I missed the conference, but thank you for posting all the important bullet points for me. I'll have to try to watch the Vita portion at least, since it sounds like the best part. Though it sounds like the whole conference was better than last year's. (Don't get me wrong, I know they wanted to push Move and 3D, but I just wanted to see some games.) Thanks again! And thank you too, Sony!

Great price point. I'm even a little attracted.

I say Sony did a good job putting up a proper and well executed E3 presentation. I would've liked to have seen one big surprise exclusive reveal to make the "A" grade, but good nonetheless. ANd certainly a stronger showing than MS's yawn-a-thon

I caught the conference live on G4 - though I had to suppress the urge to kick the TV with the two bimbos standing next to Sessler talking such bilge.

The PSVita pricing was a real 'wow' moment. I never expected a $249 price tag for the WiFi version, I figured it would come in at $299.

This will be a pre-order if possible. As will several of the games for it.

The bimbos embarrassed themselves. Sessler's veryappearance is offensive. No wonder this is the only time of year I watch G4.

Did you hear them talking about how they want an apology from Sony for being hacked, and some new up to date games for free? Sheesh.

Hmmm, I guess I blocked out all the bad memories of G4 from when I had it last year. All I remembered were Sony's and Nintendo's conferences and Unbeatable Banzuke. But now that you mention it, I also remember wincing in pain whenever a "host" would give news or reviews in commercial breaks. I don't miss that, but I do miss Unbeatable Banzuke.

It's funny how the same price point that outraged people for PSP-go is a huge win for PSV. I'm not saying both reactions aren't correct (they are), just noting the contrast.

I guess up-to-date technology and the 3DS having the same price point make all the difference.

Didn't someone here say that Jessica Chobot was a xbot? The only fault Sony had in the hack situation was not coming out right away and told people what's going on. As for her free comment games some of those free games are highly regarded PS3 titles and not everyone has the ability to play every single PS3/PSN title.

I haven't played Little Big Planet 1 since its release so I was happy when I got it Friday. As for the PS vita man I wish I had to cash to get that bad boy on day one with Street Fighter X Tekken and Uncharted.

I called her that, and I'll stand by my sarcasm.

As for Sony not being quick enough, if you look at *any* (and I really mean *any*) significant hack of a customer facing system like PSN, it takes weeks, if not months, for customers to be told of what happened. Sony announced to the world that they had been attacked within 48 hours of PSN going down. They stated clearly on their US and European blogs that the PSN was taken down because of external intrusion in the network. I don't know many people who didn't see that as a clear warning that the thing had been hacked. Within about 12 hours of having the preliminary analysis completed by third party forensic teams, Sony announced to the world much more information about what they thought had been accessed, and what precautions people should take. now, I know it's fashionable to complain about Sony, but in truth, Sony acted far faster and more effectively with this than any similar situation I can remember in the past. I don't honestly believe that anyone in the tech or gamin media is being particularly fair to them. As Jack Tretton said, being negative and jumping on that bandwagon does indeed drive hits and sell advertizing.

Totally agree. $39.99 is the *top* of the range for a game with a handheld unit. In fact, I'd suggest that Sony would do well to drop the prices to $29.99 in general because those crappy casual games on phones sell pretty much for pennies. Sure they're crap, but they're cheap, and they drag down the amount which people are willing to spend on a 'real' game for a handheld device.

Actually, if Sony kept the $39.99 price for the retail version that comes with a case, a card and a booklet, and then had a $29.99 price for the downloadable version, that would work really well.

I'm really surprised they didn't include a video out (HDMI), after including one on later models of the PSP.

It makes me want to wait for the upgraded model, so I don't get stuck without that capability, as I did with my PSP-1000.

Great so far, veeeeeery pleased but any word on specific UK pricing?

BTW any brits/europeans wondering, at the current exchange rate that works out at;
WIFI only - £151.53 exactly
3G - £181.95 exactly.
That sounds pretty damn reasonable to me :)

EDIT: just read that they might be using a 1:1 conversion rate. so GBP price would be equal to the USD price.
Which is bloody ridiculous, because youre trying to tell me the newest slim model will be cheaper than the Vita?
No way in hell am i paying above £200 for this. If its region free or whatever ill figure out a way to import it and pay the us price, works out a much better deal for me.

The UK price is based on the European price. the European price is a 1:1 with the USD price, and the Yen price appears to be a 100:1 for the USD price (more or less). SCEE prices in the UK on the basis of the price in Euros plus local VAT.

not bad, IF thats the final price will end up paying for it im in!
shame they dont have the 3G version though, would think in getting it depending on if theres monthly contracts or not, and who its with.
dunno if its just optus or not, but im really starting to regret going with them!
1GB 3G data allowance on my Iphone and im paying 70 bucks a month!
and the 3G is so f*cking slow it took me 12 minutes this morning just to open EBs home page to see if RFA had released yet, which it has.
i mean come on, twelve freaking minutes just to open one f*cking page!?
if thats how slow it will be on NGP, then no thanks ill stick to the WIFI model!
when are we going to get mobile internet thats slightly faster then freaking dialup!?

Ben, the price of the PSVita being "not bad" is the BIGGEST understatement of the year. :)

3DS has no hope with the hardcore crowd. Only thing to redeem it is Zelda: OoT 3D, Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart 3D, Kid Icarus and MGS3 Snake Eater 3D. And many of these are aaaaages away!!!

I don't see the 3DS being a hit with little kids or grandparents like the DS did. 3D on a handheld is not a good mix, especially if your moving around a lot while travelling.

Vita being $249 has just secured the competition. If CoD Elite is available on Vita and can be fused with console iterations, then that will nail the sales. (Even though I'm not a CoD fan myself)

And almost all of those games are just remakes! I like a good remake now and then but where in God's name is the original, interesting content for 3DS? I'm sure we'll get an idea at this morning's Nintendo press conference, but so far the 3DS lineup is a joke and the machine is waaaaaay too expensive. I don't think I'm getting a 3DS until/if the price comes way, way down, if ever. PSV has already won me over, I'll be getting that this holiday season for sure.

Biggest surprise of E3 next to the Playstation TV and its price.

I have no doubt that this price announcement for Vita will secure a buttload of preorders now. Far lower than people expected, and in direct competition with the handheld leader.

Sony said they'd make it cheaper than a PS3. We didn't believe them. How wrong we were.

Over here the prices should be about £151 and £181.. I'm not sure if this will be the UK prices, because the new versions of the PSP costed around £130 but they could just say keep the same figures, so £250 and £300.. One way the prices are good, the other they are a steal! So this is a definite buy for me.

I'm still on the fence until I can get more info on some of the technical details. I'm curious to know what kind of internal storage the Vita will have. Hard drive? Some expandable memory like the PSP had with Memory Stick PRO Duo? Both a hard drive and expandable memory? I'd like to have both, but I at least want there to be one or the other. If everything is done on the cloud then I'll be leaning towards not getting one.

Also, from the pictures on Sony's Playstation site, it looks like it will have Trophy support which is always fun. It's like a digital checklist for things I still haven't done...makes me hang on to games a bit longer.

I would also like to know if the device will support Bluetooth for headsets for the party chat. It'd be nice, but isn't crucial for me to buy it.

Mainly as long as there is some form of internal storage (hard drive or memory cards) and my PSP downloaded games run on it, then I'll definitely be getting the WiFi version. I might even spring for the 3G just in case I ever want that option in the future...as long as there are no contracts involved (which there shouldn't be since those are usually made because the phone company is giving you a 500 dollar device for 150).

I REALLY WANT A PSVITA. I JUST CAN'T AFFORD TO BUY TITLES FOR BOTH PS3 AND VITA. DO I BUY MADDEN OR NHL FOR VITA OR PS3? (IF THEY EVEN COME OUT ON VITA THIS FALL)I DEFINATELY WANT UNCHARTED 3 FOR PS3 BUT I WANT THE ONE FOR VITA. I WONDER WHAT THE PRICE OF THE GAMES WILL BE, AND DID THEY SHOW OFF WHAT THE GAME CARDS LOOK LIKE? ALSO WII "U" LOOKS COOL BUT JUST TOO MUCH. I MEAN I'M SURE IT WILL BE FUN. WHAT I WANTED FOR THE WII WAS NEXT GEN EXPERIENCE WITH MOTION CONTROLS AND PROCESSING POWER. IT IS LIKE THEY TOOK A STEP BACK TO TAKE A STEP FORWARD.(WITH THE WII) WE GOT GAMECUBE WITH MOTION CONTROLS. THEY SHOULD HAVE GIVEN WHAT PS3 GIVES US NOW. I KNOW YOU CAN DO BOTH WAYS OF GAMING WITH THE WII U BUT I DON'T WANT TO DO BOTH OR BE TEMPTED TO DO BOTH. I WANT THE INNOVATION TO BE ON SCREEN. I DON'T CARE EVEN ABOUT "MOVE" THAT MUCH. NBA2K12 LOOKED STUPID. WHY WOULD I WANT TO POINT AT A PLAYER TO PASS TO HIM. LIKE NO ONE CAN LEARN TO POINT A CONTROL STICK IN THE DIRECTION THEY WANT TO PASS. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL SLOW THE GAME DOWN. THE ROME GAME FOR KINECT IS THE EXPERIENCE I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN OR THE STARWARS ONE. THE MOVE NEEDS TO DO THAT, BUT WITH GRAPHICS THAT ARE NOT DUMBED DOWN FOR KIDS. ANYONE HEAR ME?
