Hirai: PlayStation Vita Will Not Launch In US This Year
Looking to put the PlayStation Vita on your holiday wish list? Don't bother. ...unless you want a really belated Christmas present.
Despite several pieces of evidence that have pointed to a holiday 2011 launch for Sony's new portable, Sony Corp. executive vice president Kaz Hirai told the Associated Press that it just won't happen. The unit won't be available in time for Christmas in the US or Europe, although it's still expected to release in Japan this year.
Hirai didn't label this news as a delay, but reaffirmed Sony's desire to come prepared to other regions with "solid game software offerings" for the Vita's launch. He wasn't specific in regards to dates but as for pricing, he was quite decisive: after Nintendo opted to slash the price of its 3DS portable, people wondered if a price cut for the Vita would also come before launch. But Hirai says no way:
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable. There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."
The Wi-Fi-only version of the Vita will hold a $249 price tag in the US and the more advanced 3G-enabled version will run you $299. For a frame of reference, depending on the Nintendo 3DS version you want, the device will cost between $169 and $249 as of August 12. But the bottom line is that we can't expect the PlayStation Vita this year, so it's time to focus on other things. ...like, games.

Don't let personal attacks keep you on the defensive. Choosing to block the jab wastes precious energy. Instead, absorb the remark with a comment that makes lite of the insult then redirect and reposition the debate with a more carefully planned rebuttal ;)

Internet banter aside, if I really wanted to insult him or hurt his feelings there is a lot worse things that could be said than Debbie Downer. Hell, my friends and I give one another a much harder time when we disagree. I'm playing softball right now.

Do you think that you entertain the rest of us? Is that what motivates you? Do you think you add something valuable to this comment field? Do you think we should all behave like you do? Is this how you would prefer to be treated?
Or do you just not care? Thinking it aint your problem anyways, noone is treating you bad so why should you care how he feel?
After all, he's not... You?

Beamboom, While I think much of what you said has significance, I don't think PSXe is necessarily a Kinder Care where we all gotta be pampered and stuff. We're dudes who spend time here because we like playing games. I don't think this casual talk should be taken too seriously. Which includes, and Is not limited to, calling someone Debbie Downer =)

When someone so *clearly* express uncomfort, regardless of it being reasonable or not, then I'd call it normal adult behaviour to stop and not just go on and on and on! Why behave like that? What's wrong with showing some empathy?

that may be trure, but i thought sony had a real oppurtunity to cut into nintendo's marketshare here. the 3ds has struggled. maybe, some of the gamers that were not very excited by 3ds at first would have considerd a vita. the devices are both handheld gaming machines so i do consider them direct competitiors even though nintendo targets a younger demographic. i do not think the ps3 and wii analogy is valid since the controls on those machines were so different. nintendo really created it's own market there. so yeah ps3 and wii not really direct competitors. i think the 3ds and vita are even if nintendo tends to get the younger demographic.

That opportunity still exists, the 3DS as a product hasn't changed because of it's price drop. There maybe more games available (for 3DS when Vita launches), but the product hasn't been a roaring success. Even if it's sales begin to recover with the price cut, that's driven by the price cut and not the product at this stage in it's life.
The key things for Vita were/are price and software. Vita has a very good price - especially when considering what you get for your money. This finalization of the launch to early 2012 in NA and EU appears to me to allow the line up of games to solidify too, so at launch vita will have both of the things it needs to succeed - a good price, and good software.
The placing of the Vita in early 2012 in NA and EU does two other things of note. First of all, there's no way we will see a PS4 during 2012 unless it's a really early prototype with no chance of launch until 2013 a the earliest. 2012 belongs to Vita. Secondly, I honestly don't think that Sony will cut the price of the PS3 to $249 or less until Vita has launched and had at very least a full quarter. If they did, it would clearly invite unfavorable price comparisons between PS3 and Vita, which I am certain Sony does not want.
I think we'll see the Vita drop in early 2012 at $2490, and then at E3, the Vita will drop to $199.99 and $249.99 (3G version), and the PS3 will drop to $249.99 then. At least that's my expectation because I don't think that anyone seriously wants to have a mobile console selling for the same as the full home console, and even though Sony were expected to drop their price this year to $249.99, they may hold back until E3, and in the meantime rely on increased bundling to maintain the SKU price while offering greater value.

I think this was done because Sony wanted to make sure there is a great line up of games for it at launch. Games sale units.
And plus I agree with all of you who said that this 4th quarter is pact of games that we most have, and we can't afford to even get all the ones that we want, so holding out until a drought will move more units and on top of that a great line up of games will help a lot with that.
I just don't know if I will get it. I would like too, but I'm not a person who can sit on a couch and play a handheld, you mind as well use a TV then with a controller in your hand.
Plus, I'm needing a phone first. I had high hopes for the "PlayStation phone" but it didn't reach it and right now I don't see it meeting what I need. Sad.. But oh well.

Right you are good sir! Some just have to look for any reason to dump on Sony no matter what. I think Sony learned from their abysmal PS3 launch. No software equals hardware sales. This is something Nintendo should have been able to avoid with the launch if the 3DS.

if the software isn't ready then i guess it is okay, but i think it would have been preferable to go at nintendo when they were vulnerable. what's strange was psp was insanely popular in japan, but never really cuaght on here. i hope we do not see the same thing happen this time around.
i still think there is an oppurtunity for sony to pick up some marketshare since the 3ds has struggled.
@n4g nutcase please stop whining about the ps3's luanch. LOL! you are being a negative nancy. goo, goo. does not reflect well as a member of sony defense force.

Okay, see here is my problem with you are your comments. I'll be nice and explain as tactfully as I can.
Why does it matter so much? You say it doesn't matter but actions speak louder than words and all you have done is act as if this is some death match between hardware companies. Nintendo is not a threat to Sony nor is Sony a threat to Nintendo. They are different systems targeting different markets. There's room for both to be successful. There is not reason the Vita needs to "challenge" the 3DS. Those who want the Vita will get the Vita, those who want the 3DS will get the 3DS and those like me who want both will get both.
EDIT: you know I tried to be respectful like you asked, I rarely complain about the PS3 launch. Unlike you who has nothing to say other then whining REPEATEDLY about trivial nonsense like a petulant child.
How old are you? Just curious...

you mentioned above how i whine about sony being in last place, etc. i am not going to lie . it has not been easy for me to accept that. it's frustrating as hell to watch a great system with a great exclusive line up finish in last place. i do not think i will ever be happy about that. maybe, in time i will learn to accept it, but i will always wonder why this has happened.
finally, is there anyway you and i can have a truce? i promise not call you names, and to be respectful. i do not have a problem wth what you say, it is the snide namecalling i dislike. it does not reflect well on the psxe community, and i would like for it to end please.

To which I replied..."actions speak louder than words and all you have done is act as if this is some death match between hardware companies." Which you have. Even in articles that have nothing do to with MS vs Sony(like the Sucker Punch thread) you still whine about it.
You say..."am not going to lie . it has not been easy for me to accept that. it's frustrating as hell to watch a great system with a great exclusive line up finish in last place. i do not think i will ever be happy about that. maybe, in time i will learn to accept it, but i will always wonder why this has happened."
To which I will reply again..."It's trivial nonsense. They are both great and successful companies. I wish success for BOTH! You whine about Sony always being behind, as if it's the end all be all if Sony."
"finally, is there anyway you and i can have a truce? i promise not call you names, and to be respectful. i do not have a problem wth what you say, it is the snide name calling i dislike. it does not reflect well on the psxe community, and i would like for it to end please."
Sure...I will stop giving you a hard time in the form is softball internet banter if it really bothers you that much but you are going to have to toughen up and except the fact that none of this stuff matters as much as you seem to think it does. You're an easy target Excelsior. Whining constantly about the same things over and over is going to attract negative feed back. I'm not the only one who is sick of reading it, I'm just the only one who is willing to say anything about it. And please don't lecture me about how this reflects the PSX community. I speak or myself and if I really was an "NG4 nutcase", I would have been banned along time ago.
With that said, Truce.

thank you very much. truce here as well. nobody else here picks on me and 99.9% are respectful. i don't think namecalling is necessary, and won't do it again.
i do think sales matter. i don't think sony is going anywhere, but i do think those na numbers are a concern. i do not think it is a trivial matter at all. it distorts the industry, and has had a dramatic affect on japanese developers. i will try to toughen up about it, but i do worry about the overall health the industry as long as ms dominates here.
anyways, jawk thank you for accepting the truce. i feel much better now. i feel so good i gave you a thumbs up. peace.

As for the 3DS, I don't think it warrants any real comparison in price. These are two entirely different devices aimed at entirely different markets. I don't know anyone who's torn over whether to get one or the other. And seriously? How can anyone complain about a $250 launch price for something so badass?

Vita is making a smarter move, instead of hoping to sell a lot of units on the gadget loving side of things they are going to wait until the software lineup is strong. The drawback is they miss holiday sales, but Sony has always been less about opportunism and more about quality over time.

As for the #3DS, the gimmick is actually good, but it is a Novelty. It is a shame but that word seems to define Nintendo more and more nowadays.
Damn, now I don't know if I want to go with getting a Vita imported from Japan. I don't want to pay up the ying if the games are not there. But I do want! Decisions decisions!

Although I could not imagine a world without a Nintendo console. What if Nintendo and Sony collaborated? And actually pulled it off this time. Looking at the bigger picture Microsoft is more than just a thorn in their sides. Maybe not so much in Japan but a Sony/Nintendo team would eliminate that competition worldwide easily.
I actually see Nintendo's franchises on other platforms possibly in the next few years. Depending of the success of the Wii-U. I am skeptical that it will be a hit. It just doesn't appeal to me all that much for some reason. Or many reasons.

All in all, with the economics changing so fast, Sony again may have its work cut out for it. I want the Vita but I am going to wait for a price drop...
Even if I must wait until 2014... I will let the hardware and platform mature a bit... and enjoy my PS3 for now...

a few months is not going to make much difference, and kaz did say it will be out in all regions by the end of the financial year which for sony ends march 31st.
so it wont be too much longer of a wait.
plus its region free so if you just have to buy one this year, then why not import it?
