European Gamers Receive New Wi-Fi-Less PSP Model

Well, it's cool for European gamers, at least.

Today, during Sony's GamesCom 2011 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and CEO Jim Ryan revealed a nifty new option for handheld gaming fans:

It's a brand new PSP, which will be priced at a very reasonable €99 ($143). The only downside is that this cheaper model will not boast Wi-Fi capability like other PSP entries. There will also be a slight cosmetic change - as you can see by the picture - but other than that, it's basically the PSP we all know and love. SCEA confirmed to GameSpot that US gamers won't be seeing this new PSP model, although he didn't give any details or explanation. Well, we can all wait for the Vita, which should launch some time early next year.

If you don't have a PSP yet, you really should consider a purchase. It has quite the solid library, especially if you're looking for experiences you really can't find on consoles.

Hey I liked that new look! Sony sure know design.

But I gotta say: How is it even *possible* to launch a gadget like this without wifi support in 2011? You can't even access the psn shop then, unless you got a ps3? I just don't get it.

Well everyone has a PC of some sorts now-a-days, and it's simple.

connect PSP to PS3 with USB, upload content from PSN to PS3, install from PS3 to PSP, undo USB, play with PSP...I do it all the time...

Dependence on another machine to access content somewhat hinders the portable experience. No Store?

Maybe in developing countries? Sony baffles me sometimes.

@High: Ah yeah, that's... Easy.
Makes you wonder why wifi is included in *any* device, doesn't it?! :D
Back in the days they used horse and carriage to the local market to buy groceries. And wouldn't you know, they got fed back then too.

@fathasun: Exactly. Wonder if it says "PC or PS3 not included" on the box? :D

I have a confession. I've had my PSP for about five years, and not once used the Wi-Fi. Yup, I'm out of date!

It looks pretty. The face buttons and directional pad look more confortable. No Wifi though? But why?

I like the design. Looks slick. Does the whole back plate flip open for the UMD? I never use the wifi anyway, so this is something I would get, if it was coming to Canada... and I didn't already have a slim that's still going strong.

Yeah, I'm not really getting the reasoning for this wifi less PSP model either, especially now of all times.

I mean it's so close to the Vita coming out. So why bother risking even one extra Vita's sales potential???

It looks a lot closer to the Vita design than the one for the original PSP models. Least I know what I'm getting if my PSP dies before I can get through the last few games for it.

whats the point of a wifi less PSP?
how are you going to do the updates for it?
they would of been better off doing a redesign to the 3000, a last hoorah for the PSP.
when somethings going out you give it one last shine, make it better.
not worse!
