UMD Movie Sales Slumping

Hollywood pub Variety is reporting that the PSP "isn't turning out to be the hot new movie platform many in the biz had hoped."

According to an article published this week, comedy-themed movies on the UMD platform are selling well, but other genres "simply aren't selling."

As a result, Sony and other companies are increasing the output of comedy content, but scaling back releases in other genres.

Warner Home Video has delayed six planned PSP-UMD titles, including "Goodfellas," from their scheduled April-June rollout.

Paramount has no new PSP releases planned for the coming months.

Sony is also cutting back releases, but has high hopes for the upcoming release of Monty Python episodes and "Not Another Teen Movie" on the UMD format. Currently, the top-selling UMD movie is Fox's "Napoleon Dynamite," which is a comedy.

According to industry statistics, top-selling UMD movies generally sell more than 100,000 units, although the average release hovers closer to 40,000-50,000 units.

In an effort to bolster the format, Sony recently displayed a set-top device at the Consumer Electronics Show that would allow people to watch UMD movies on their televisions. Sony execs are currently showing off the adapter to studio bigwigs in an effort to rekindle interest in the format.
