AIAS To Capcom: No Soup For You!
You know, when you don't play by the rules, you always come up empty in the end.
For yet another year, one of the industry's biggest publishers was passed over by the AIAS (Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences), and they aren't taking kindly to the omission. We gamers were awfully confused when Resident Evil 4 didn't warrant any nominations in 2005, and with the potentially worthy Okami and Dead Rising in their 2006 lineup, it seems Capcom has a legitimate case for complaint. Unfortunately, as we stated earlier, you gotta play by the rules.
According to AIAS rules, Capcom must become a member of the organization - and that means paying some fees - or they can't be eligible for any nominations or awards the AIAS chooses to hand out. ...sounds pretty logical to us, even though we can see how the "fee" part might be somewhat irritating. But then again, considering the amount of money Capcom rakes in, we can't imagine such fees would be a major concern.
The simple bottom line is that they need to become an AIAS member, or they won't be seeing any nominations. Ever. And it's not like this is a secret special rule that applies only to Capcom; it seems the AIAS has released the names of several other game companies ineligible for awards (Tecmo and Eidos being two biggies), so it's all cut and dry: pay up, or shut up.
