Sony Makes PSP Price Drop Official

Last night we reported that EB and GameStop locations received PSP price-drop materials that displayed an all new $169.99 figure for the unit. Today, Sony has made it official that the PSP's price will be reduced to $169.99 as of today, nationwide. This new price affects the core pack, which was previously $199.99.

"We have always been passionate about making great entertainment accessible to everyone, and the new price for PSP, as well as the continued growth of the 'Greatest Hits' library, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting and expanding the PSP community," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"We are pleased that we are able to engineer savings for the consumer at this stage of PSP's lifecycle, allowing more individuals to experience PSP for the first time. In particular, we have recently seen a steady rise in the number of teens adopting PSP as their primary handheld entertainment system, and we expect the new price will accelerate that trend."

This announcement comes shortly after the PSP's second anniversary being on the American market. Sony has announced that by the end of 2006, the PSP's shipment numbers rose to 25 million, and a million of those systems were sold last December here in North America. Lastly, over 90 million PSP software units have shipped, as well.
