Sony: We're Not Making A PSP Phone

Last week, we learned the PSP might be going through a major transformation, in which Sony's handheld would also add phone functionality. And while the PSP is certainly going to be redesigned, Sony has denied that a portable gaming machine/cell phone is not part of the project.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves denied a PSP phone in speaking with MCV, and it helps that he's familiar with the major players in this little saga.

“I know the head of Sony Ericsson very well,” said Reeves. “He has a Walkman phone and a Cybershot phone available, but I know nothing about a PSP phone. I haven’t heard anything about it at all – and I would know. They wouldn’t develop it without our knowledge.”

As you can see, the patent sketch is indeed real, but as we stated before, that certainly doesn't mean the product is inevitable. It simply gives Sony the option, should they decide to make the leap at some point in the future. And at this time, it doesn't appear they're heading in that direction for the PSP. But don't worry, as our other article indicates, there's plenty to be excited about regarding the new revamped portable.
