If you think that the current Playstation is
overpopulated with racing games, think again.
Playstation 2 will allow the racing game makers to
design games beyond our beliefs with superior
graphics that surpass the highest-powered computers
(currently). Square has already announced that they
will provide huge support for the new system and not
only with their RPG titles. They made that clear
when Driving Emotion Type-S was announced which
would compete with the early titles like Ridge Racer
5 and Gran Turismo 2000. But this time Square won't
be doing the development under their roof, they
rather teamed up with Escape to develop the
company's first PS2 racer.
Even
though Playstation 2 packs the power to execute some
of the most complicated physics, to use that power a
good physics engine must be built which will
simulate real life factors that trigger certain
actions and movements. Aerodynamics are some of the
physics that require extensive programming and good
hardware for execution. All of this translates into
better simulation and feel for the gamer.
Enough
with the tech talk, lets get down to the gaming. Now
what is a simulator without the real cars? Square
picked up the licenses for many of the manufacturers
like Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi and more vehicles,
which have previously appeared only in the Gran
Turismo series. But here is the icing on the cake,
vehicles like Ferraris, Porsches and other exotic
cars that we haven't seen in the GT series will be
available to the gamer in Driving Emotion Type-S.

For the first time, we will see a new view
introduced which has never been used before. Type-S
will feature a view from the eyes of the racer.
Everything the guy in the car sees, that's what you
see. It will really put you in the driver's seat and
show you what real racing is all about.
Square's
Driving Emotion Type-S sounds like a good competitor
for Namco's Ridge Racer 5 and Sony's Gran Turismo
2000, but unfortunately it won't be found on the
Japanese store shelves on the launch date of PS2. No
release date is yet scheduled but we expect to see
this one released in Japan by the end of Spring
2000.
