When PS2 was revealed, one of the very first titles
shown off was Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. The first
two games (Abe's Oddysee and Exxodus) have been
released on the PS for quite some time, and both got
extremely positive praise. The games were about Abe
a Mudokon who destroys his enemies by farting. Abe
is an ugly creature, but as ugly as he is, fans of
the series want to see more of him, and so Oddworld
Inhabitants (the developer) is releasing Oddworld on
the PS2. The game has no scheduled date yet but
expect after Fall 2000.
The videos that I was shown was mind boggling. It
made me drool and at the same time laugh at the
outrageous humor that the movies showed off. There
was a movie where a Mudokon was being beaten up and
Abe jumped into the action by picking up the enemy
and throwing him out of the tower window, funny
stuff! You might be asking yourself who is Munch?
Munch is a one legged character who is one of a
kind. Abe kidnaps Munch because scientists want to
cut Munch open and experiment him, but Munch doesn't
understand that. Abe and Munch are extremely hateful
and throughout 50% of the game they are at each
others necks. Only later on in the game does Munch
understand what is happening to him, then he and Abe
kiss and make up, errr... maybe not. Munch is one of
a kind because he is the last of his species, but as
I said before he [Munch] doesn't realize that.
In the game you have two characters to choose from,
Munch and Abe. Oh and did we mention that Abe moves
Munch around in a wheelchair, he does have one leg
you know. A pair of new enemies such as the Vykkers
and Meetles will be giving Abe and Munch a hard
time. The Meetles can change disguises and the
Vykkers are doctors and scientists.
Visually this is an incredible looking game,
Oddworld Inhabitants is already one of the biggest
polygon crunchers that the PS2 will have to offer.
The amazing effects can make anybody take a leak in
their pants, seasons change in real-time, you will
notice leaves falling down, trees losing shape,
water disappearing from their destinations almost
magically evaporating. The game engine makes a lot
of use of the PS2's Emotion Engine and the Graphical
Synthesizer, the anti-aliasing is already in use and
for those non-believers take a look at these
magnificent screens.
We will let the screenshots do the rest of
explaining about Munch's Oddysee. The game may be
far of from its release but the longer we wait the
better the game will be. The Getaway and Oddworld
are currently the best looking future PS2 titles to
date. Enjoy the screens we have, oh and you can fart
while looking at them.
