The
Competition:
Sony isn't afraid of the competition at all, their
PS has sold over 75 million units worldwide, and the
PS2 has already managed to break the 1 million mark
within 4-5 days. Dreamcast's US launch was pretty
big but it took Sega approximately 2 weeks to reach
one million. As I have mentioned before, 3rd party
support is Sony's key to success, if it wasn't for
brands like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Tomb
Raider, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, and Tony Hawk's
Pro Skater, the PSX would be a lot weaker in terms
of sales. What makes Playstation such a dominator is
its variety, you have everything from Elmo to Need
For Speed and to Quake. The PS has around 1000
titles in the US, and over 3000 titles in Japan, it
is obvious that Sony has taken the world by storm.
The PS2
caused frenzies in Japan, people camped out for 3-4
days just to get their hands on a PS2. Sega doesn't
pose a big challenge to Sony at all, and Nintendo
thinks that their new Project Dolphin system will
revolutionize, but it will suffer the same fate that
N64 did. There are way too many problems with the
N64 system, mainly because it is cartridge based and
although that gives no loading time, there is
extremely little space and profits for companies to
work with. Did you know that FF7 was planned to be
released on the N64 but Square wasn't able to
achieve anything with the project so they scraped it
around 3rd or 4th week of production, or so I've
heard. The third party support is by far the worst,
the only support that Nintendo has is Rare, Midway,
Acclaim and that is basically it. Other developers
such as Capcom, Namco and Square are either with
Sega and Sony.
To me
Nintendo is out of the ball game, in my opinion Sega
should have survived and fought with PS not
Nintendo. Sega's library of titles was far better
than what Nintendo had to offer us, frankly I
enjoyed playing Saturn way over N64. With the
announcement of the X-Box and how powerful it is,
Sony still doesn't seem to be shaking in their
boots. But it has been said that X-Box's floating
point processor is far inferior to PS2's and is on
the level of DC's. Though the system has an
advantage over PS2, it has 64 MB RAM, while Sony has
32 MB RAM. To me X-Box will just be an overhyped
piece of machine, but you never know, Microsoft can
hit gold with first strike just like Sony did five
years ago. My prediction is that Sony will come out
on top, Sega will follow, while X-Box remains in a
close third to Sega and Nintendo will trail in a
distant fourth.
