Backward
Compatibility/Incompatibility:
One of the PS2's coolest features is that the system
has backward compatibility. But right before the
system went on sale, Sony released a little list of
titles that don't work with the system. Out of
the Japan's 3,000 PS titles only about 20 have been
discovered so far. What no one knew was that the PS2
is also able to enhance regular PS games by about
eight to ten percent. The loading and texture can be
enhanced using the PS2's browser. We have seen a few
games get a slight boost in visuals, just don't
expect a huge change, 'cause basically what you're
going to get is just better backgrounds.
DVD
Region Lock Out Code:
If you
were one of the people who bought one of the PS2s
out of the batch of 980,000, then you most likely
have a version 1.00 Utility Disc. Installing the DVD
Driver on to your memory card will allow you to
watch Region 1 (US) DVDs in addition to the Region 2
(Japan and Europe). By holding UP on an original PS1
Sony controller (non analog, non dual shock), the
intro movie should play and then a few seconds later
the DVD should start running. But to enforce the
recall of the faulty Utility Disk in Japan, Sony
says that all games released after April 1st will
not work if you have the V 1.0 Driver installed, but
we were unable to confirm this. So if you want to
keep the V 1.00 Disc you should by loading the
drivers onto another memory card and use it to watch
DVD's with.
