E3 2003: Vectorman Hands-on Impressions
Admittedly, I was never a big fan of the original two Vectorman titles for the Genesis. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I came to the Vectorman kiosk at Sega's booth. For starters, the game looked pretty solid. There were nice visual touches here and there and the texture detail wasn't lacking, either. What was incredibly impressive was the amount of environmental interactivity that was given to you. I could destroy pretty much any object in front of me. Hell, I spent a good 10 minutes just blowing a bunch of sh*t up -- the interactivity was awesome! Despite being early in the development cycle, the game still contained a very consistent frame rate, which was a relief.
Vectorman played really well, and five minutes into the game, I found myself pretty hooked. Playing Vectorman felt like playing a more enjoyable, and fast paced Armored Core game. Despite not being able to control a character made out of spherical objects, the controls were smooth and very easy to get acquainted with. Shooting, dodging, jumping and running never felt like a chore. I should also mention that the combat portions of the game were a blast to go through. Best of all, unlike Armored Core games, you can actually use the analog stick to control your character. Overall, while this build was rather early, a mere 30%, Vectorman shows tons of potential to kick all sorts of ass. Look for it during the beggining of 2004.
