Parappa the Rapper is by far one of the most recognizable Sony characters. Hitting it off incredibly big on the Playstation in 1998, Parappa is without a doubt one the coolest characters ever produced. The rappin' pup's first adventure was to win the heart of Sunny Funny. A female dandylion whom he had a crush on. By now if you aren't familiar with Parappa the Rapper then you my friend have some serious disease and do not deserve to be called a gamer. After a disappointing (and much more challenging) spin-off title where Parappa only makes a cameo appearance, fans of the original began begging for an official sequel to Parappa the Rapper, but would Sony deliver? Of course they would! How could Sony possible leave Parappa out in the cold? Instead of being released on the PSOne, Sony will release the Japanese version of Parappa 2 this August, and possibly Winter 2001 in the US.
Staying faithful to the originator, Sony didn't sell out and develop a completely three-dimensional title. Instead original Parappa designs were left, as the animation is still "paper-thin," and the backgrounds are just as well. I know that every fan of the original Parappa is happy with the 2D decision that Sony went with over, over the unnecessary 3D decision. I've seen a few videos of the game and some screenshots (which we'll try to have ASAP) and the game looks great. Aside it being 2D, the animation is splendid and the coloring is grade-A. The environments almost seem cell-shaded if I'm not mistaken, but then again the screens were pretty small, so it was hard to tell. All I can tell you folks about the visuals is that you'd all better expect some bright and vivid 2D animation, even though it's not exactly "harnessing" the PS2's power, it's still pretty to look at.
The story of the original was about Parappa trying to impress Sunny Funny. In the sequel a gang has invaded Parappa's hometown, called the Noodle Gumi, or translated in English as the Noodle Troops. These Noodle Troops are affecting Parappa's town by replacing all of the food with Noodles! It's up to Parappa to rhyme these noodle lovin' bastards outta' his town. And with the help of various teachers such as, Guru Ant, Hairdresser Octopus, Beard Burger Master, Moosesha and of course Chop Chop Master Onion!! Below is a group shot of all the teachers and Parappa.
Of course characters like Lammy, Sunny Funny, PJ Berri, and Lammy's band The Milk Can will assist you in your quest as well. Currently no official release date has been set for Parappa 2, although Japanese gamers will get their hands on the game around mid-August, and US signs point to holiday season 2001. No word on online gameplay either, but this is not something that should be ruled out, and will remain as an option. *Clap, clap, clap* "Dat's it for to-day Parappa."
