I'll admit that I was a huge fan of Midway's Hydro Thunder arcade game, Dreamcast game and Playstation game. My money literally poured into an arcade machine that I came across all the time I went to the city. Hydro Thunder provided me with an adrenaline rush like no other game had, the only thing missing from the blood pumping experience was buckets of water being poured all over you. Sadly Midway won't be brining a Hydro Thunder game for the PS2, not one I'm aware of at least. But gladly those good ol' folks over at Crave Entertainment have fulfilled my wet desire, errr, you know what I mean. They have just announced H2Overdrive for Playstation 2. Here is a full preview and screenshots of the game, one of them being in-game.
Crave did release a few other gameplay screens, but they were too small to post on the page, so there's only one actual gameplay shot of H2Overdrive. Never the less, the game is impressive, judging by the screenshot the water effects are something that the PS2 is able to compose amazingly, as upcoming AAA title Wave Rally is currently proving my point. Aside from water visuals, the craft detail rivals that of (the arcade version) Hydro Thunder's detail, and in some cases exceeds it. The environments shows off a splendor of detail, as the speed boat in the screen races down the Nile River. Sadly I haven't seen this game in its wild action, as stills don't do justice on how the final product will most likely turn out. I'm going to bug my Crave rep to find one way or another to get me the full scoop on this game.
If you happened to catch yesterday's news and announcement on H2Overdrive then you would notice the slew of features that this game will have. They will include general features such as a Championship mode, Single Race, Duel, Survival, Checkpoint, Ghost and Cat & Mouse. I have a vague idea on Ghost mode, as many of you do, albeit I'm not too sure about Cat & Mouse. It's very possible that this is some kind of 'capture the flag' mode, and if it is, then I know I will drop dead! It would be amazing to play 'capture the flag' with speed boats, and I'm sure you all agree with me. H2Overdrive will also have, ten huge and incredibly diverse tracks. By 'diverse' I mean you'll be able to go to Iceland, ride around the outer skirts of an amusement park, or even the human body! In addition to ten stages, there will be ten characters which of course means there will be 10 speed boats, and with the speedboats come pick ups power ups such as various attacks and turbo boosts. The track detail will feature shortcuts, as it is almost customary to do with similar games. Crave has also made it official that the game will feature secret tracks and speed boats which ups the the replay value of the game to a certain degree. I am going to keep my out on this title, it has quickly become one of my more anticipated PS2 games of 2001.
