Contra was one of the biggest games on the NES back in the 80's. After several rehashes and failed sequels, the Contra series seemed destined for the video game graveyard. However, Konami is not letting go of one of their mainstays without a fight, and are giving new life to Contra on the Playstation 2. Nothing of the story behind this latest installment was disclosed in the demo, only a lot of good ol' fashioned gunplay, the Contra way. With 3D characters and backgrounds played in 2D, Contra has that surreal kind of look you find in a lot of next-gen 2D fighters. The backgrounds themselves looked very nice and detailed, and so did most enemies, however the main characters were poorly drawn in the demo.
However, regardless of the amount of detail or the depth of story, the best thing about this latest installment of Contra is that it has revived what made the series so much fun in the first place- simple, fun, and addictive gunplay. With a lot of different weapons to choose from, like flamethrowers laser cannons and more, mixed with the original Contra style gameplay, the series is given new life in this game with some incredibly fun gameplay. In fact, once my time was up, I found myself looking for another open station to get in some more Contra fun. As a testament to how good this game will be every Contra station had people waiting 10-15 deep.
Overall, it looks like Konami got the message us gamers were sending us, and instead of trying to go too far from the ideals of the original hit game, they instead gave us exactly what we wanted- Contra for the new millennium.
