Unreal Tournament Preview
Arguably one of the most popular first person shooters on the PC, Unreal Tournament stands right next to other bloody FPS titles like Quake III: Arena and Half Life. The three titles are some of the best built FPS shooters to date, but why keep them only on PCs when console gamers want a piece of the action as well. Infogrames and developer Epic Games have decided that it is time to give gamers a break and let them have one of the coolest first person shooters produced. With the new power that consoles have, developers find more freedom and options to work with, in order to port a PC title on a console flawlessly. Infogrames/Epic's FPS title will be arriving as a launch title on the PS2, take a look at the first look and check out the screens.
The PC visuals rocked, minimum requirements were Pentium 200 MhZ, but to get a full dosage of what UT really had to offer, you had to play it on a monster PC, preferably PIII 450 MhZ, Ultra Viper 770, 128 Bit RAM etc. The PS2's specs are almost equal to the specs listed before and that's why it would be extremely easy to port UT from PC to PS2, but developing it would be a slight challenge if all Epic knew was PCs. By looking at the screens I can imply that the visuals for the PS2 version of UT will be faithful to the PC counterpart. The textures are nicely structured and constructed to re create the whole sci-fi feel which made the PC hit such as wonder. Character detail seems to be every bit as good as the PC title, the polygons all appear to be placed perfectly and judging by these screens not a single show of edgy/blocky bodies have been seen yet. The only thing I'm worried about right now is the frame rate, hopefully Epic pushes the PS2 to some extent but also keeps the frame rate juiced.
Sadly just recently Epic Games announced that a four player deathmatch mode will not make it to the PS2 version of UT, but he also continued by saying that online gameplay will be a solution. The USB modem will not be used for USB as previously believed. Instead Epic said that they will support online gaming for UT via PS2's Ethernet Adapter that may be some time but Epic has said that they will be including a patch for Unreal which I'm guessing can be downloaded into the hard drive. And get this, PC owners and PS2 owners WILL be able to play each other (in Unreal) via network play sometime later next year. UT will not only be about multiplayer gaming but also about variety. Unreal will include an assortment of modes these are the four know so far, there could be more as the game nears finish; Capture the Flag, ASsault, Deatmatch, and Domination. Unreal really shines in the weapon area, the weapons that are included in UT are a Chainsaw, Enforcer, Minigun, Pulse Blaster, Redeemer, BioRifle, Shock Rifle, Flak Cannon, Ripper, Impact Hammer and a Rocket Launcher. We are still digging for more info on Unreal Tournament for Playstation 2 we will surely update this preview. UT is scheduled for a launch day (Oct. 26) release.
