Onimusha Preview
Yeah we know that we haven't updated our Onimusha preview in ages, so here I am, 10 days before the release of the game, providing you future owners of Onimusha the latest info on graphics and gameplay. We should be getting our copy of Onimusha shortly, but I still feel that I should give you folks the heads up on the visuals. The current screenshots of Onimusha reflect the final product rather well. The character detail will be made up of whopping 10,000 polygons each! To date this is the most seen in any Playstation 2 game, and just by looking at the game, it's easy to tell that the number is certainly not inflated to any extent. Akechi, who is the Demon Warrior and Onimusha's protagonist, looks absolutely phenomenal! His physical detail sports the smoothest body parts to be ever seen in any videogame, I can't even decide which game looks better, The Bouncer or Onimusha: Warlords, **sigh**, being a critic is hard stuff.
The reason for the absurd amount of polygons that a character has is because of the fact that the backgrounds are a mix of pre-rendered and real-time graphics, the pre-renders dominating the real-time by a wide margin although. The backgrounds look incredible as well; they are literally overflowing with detail. Water, is an example of one of the real-time backgrounds, it's transparency effect is unbelievably gorgeous and it almost makes you think you were viewing a CG. Now speaking of CGs, Warlords does have them, hence the reason why this game is jammed onto a DVD disk, and from the few clips I've seen, like the rest of the game, the CGs are breathtaking. Soon enough we will get our retail copy on Onimusha and provide you all with tons of screenshots. Just you wait...
I really don't want to get much into the story, rather save it all for the review, but I'll talk a little about gameplay and the setting. Onimusha takes time during Feudal Japan, in the mid-1,500s, there have been a few attempts by another empire to take over Japan. The game's main character, Akechi Samanosuke is a swordsman -a Samurai if you will-, (SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD) who's biggest goal is to rescue the King's daughter, [The Princess]. She was kidnapped, and now it's up to Akechi and a sidekick of his who goes by the name of Kaede to rescue her and help out Japan while they're at it. Kaede is a mystical being with powers that she herself is not aware of, and with Akechi's swordsmanship, them as a duo is a mix only waiting for some blood to be splattered on walls. The game works by you holding the R2 button, so that your character would pull out his weapon and get into his fighting stance, awaiting the flesh that their weapon will have dangling on it after one of them gets through with an enemy. Combining various other buttons can make for a deadly combination, such as double or triple attacks that will deal critical damage to a nearby enemy. You'd be surprised how Akechi and Kaede met, but chances are that you may have seen something similar in a motion-picture.
There is so much for me to mention about Onimusha, but if you guys wait a few days, I'll deliver a full review of all the juicy details on this hotly anticipated game, that is the fastest selling PS2 game in Japan. Nearly 1 million have been sold in a month and a half period. To view Onimusha: Warlords in action, go to Capcom.com, and click on Onimusha. There you can find a 20 second commercial of Onimusha.
