Sony To Sell PS3 Vouchers In Japan

This is an idea that might not go over well given the U.S. must-have-it-now mentality, but Sony's taking a chance in Japan. So even if you can't land that uber-rare PS3 for the holidays as a greatly desired gift, you can always just hand them a little slip that basically doubles as an I.O.U.

Mainichi Interactive reported today that Sony, likely expecting some relatively severe PS3 shortages, has devised a way to give would-be consumers the next best thing- in place of the console itself, hopeful future PS3 owners in Japan will be able to purchase a voucher, supposedly "guaranteeing" a system for early 2007.

Mainichi didn't go into further details, but did cite yesterday's Oneda speech as a source. So far, this only appears to be available for the Japanese market, and as far as we're concerned, that's a good move. Handing over a silly voucher in place of the actual gift on Christmas Day in the U.S. could be construed as...well, lame.
