Call of Duty: Black Ops User Review
So i suppose most people will want to know if if's better than MW2. Well in a short answer yes. In terms of quality it falls in between MW2 and W@W being the poorer games in the series and COD4 being the best in the series.
There are serveral reason why the game will fail to top COD4 in terms of overall quality and presentation. The main description i'd give this game is like MW2 1.5 it takes all the best qaulity of MW2 and W@W and polishes it up quite a notch although not completely successfully though.
Singleplayer: The single player campaign is definately a highlight as it's dark and gritty however there were a couple of gripes i had with the game. The biggest being a error code coming up at the end of a level causing my ps3 to crash. Upon reloading the game i was then forced to replay the level again, which when playing on Veteran difficulty kinda sucked. The Enemy AI and friendly AI feels accomplished in certain parts but then a switch must flick or something and they behave irratically and dare i say it stupidly. The enviroments and character models do look nice although they also feel like recycled left over artwork from the previous W@W game. The game also relys quite abit on set pieces and giving you amazingly powerful weapons and tons of enemies who run into your path for you to shoot, sort of like playing through the Rambo movies just with more violence. The other thing with blackops is that there seems to be a few cutscences in the games that feel, well they just feel not nessecary like the part with the black bird or walking through the pentagon to see Presedent Kenedy. While going through these parts i felt that the game only needed to touch upon these parts for a few seconds than produce cutscence that last a good couple of minutes. Criticism aside the camapaign is enjoyable enough for gun ho shooting fans and will do just enough to satisfy but not quite enough to excel above other AAA quality titles.
This is really what most people have bought the game for and tbh they wont be disappointed. Treyach have taken all the good things from the MW2 mp and effectively made it more efficient and smooth while adding in enough new features to pique peoples interest including the excellent cinema mode. Treyarch also saw fit to implent an economy system on top of the traditional XP system simular to the recent changes made in MAG. FOr the best part the system works though, although even for the average joe leveling up and earning COD points as they are called can be very easy and perhaps doesnt seem as challenging as perhaps it should be. All in all though bar a few hiccups with connecting to games and partying up (which is not unual for a COD game) there is enough to keep people entertained with MP till the next COD game rolls around. The zombies are present, the MP and combat training are solid and the easter eggs (deadops arcade) are ll great additions to the game although this may change when the inevatable hackers/glitchers get involved.
To put it simply, Black ops is a good game and is better than most good games out there, however while its not the weakeast game in the franchise its still riddled with enough flaws and problems to ensure that it's not the best game in the franchise. Treyarch have upped their game and its a promising step forward, but i do wonder what more they could have done if Activision had given them abit more time for prodution and polish. That being said if your a fan of COD you wont be disappointed, if your a casual you'll enjoy this too.
Balls in your court now GG and EA.
