Star Ocean The Last Hope -International- User Review
Game genre : Japanese Role playing game (JRPG)
Star ocean the Last International is a game that had a potential of a perfect 10/10 score , it had the potential to be the best JRPG i have ever played , unfortunately it failed to acheive its potential , all said it is still a very enjoyable ride that is sure to please JRPG fans all around the globe.
Star ocean 4 (last hope) is a prequel , but it is also said to be the last game in the series
You Play as Edge Marvek (a 20 year old boy ) paired with his childhood friend Reimi ( a 19 year old girl ) as part of the crew of a space ship called the Calnus , Since the year is 2087 and the third world war has struck mankind and earth so badly that the earth atmosphere is no longer habitable and people are living underground because of pollution , the calnus duty is to explore the vast star ocean to determine another planet suitable for Colonization , however the mission goes terribly wrong and the rest is for you to discover.
The Good :
-A long game 40-60 hours , that keeps you immersed in such a way u wont beleive 40 hours have passed and you are already fighting the final Boss.
-An Epic story nothing less is expected from a sqaure enix JRPG , the story is really good , not exactly original but the most part of the story is in the journey itself , in the vast star ocean you meet with feirce enemies and make some great new friends.
-soundtrack is really good.
-The combat and the gameplay , is by far the best thing in this game , its it the best combat system i have ever seen in an RPG (hell maybe in any game ) in my life .
-Ability to switch between party members and choose party leader is awesome to be honest.
-Japanese voice acting , That really suits the characters , English voices are not exactly bad , but trust me u want to play this game with japanese voice.
(subtitles and english audios can be selcted from the setting menu)
-A lot of collectables , Upgardes , magic , Weapons its just awesome.
-The AI of computer controlled party members is very good (most of the time)
-A lot to do once you beat the game extra dungueons , boss fights and colluesom fights can add another 30 hours or so.
-Graphics are bad , sometimes giving the feeling as if its a ps2 game , On other occasions the environment and character models can be quite good sometimes .
-From rate drops occur a lot especially when u master some crazy stuff in the combat and the whole screen goes into chained comboos.
-The game picks up really slowly and the best part of the game is the Last 10 Hours , when your party is complete.
-beleive it or not , Boss fights can take up to an hour , And there is some very very very long cutscenes.
-The construction of the map is bad , and the inability to pause cutscenes is really stupid.
-Save points are far apart sometimes (but well this adds to the intensity of the game).
- For those of you who are trophy Lovers , Trophies are hard to earn in this game.
In The End:
Even though with Final Fantasy XIII right arround the corner , star ocean is a descent Classic JRPG , That provides an epic Journey and fine combat (real time) that keeps you emersed in the game the whole time.
If u like Classics your gonna love this one , But if all you care about is graphics then dont buy this game.
I myself really liked the game , it was one hell of a journey for me.
