Valkyria Chronicles User Review
Welkin Gunther is a university student majoring in biology; he longs to become a teacher. After returning home to Bruhl in the nation of Gallia, he finds that he is well suited for the military life. Following in the footsteps of his father, the famous General Belgen Gunther, Welkin leads Squad 7 of the Gallian army against Imperial Forces invading Welkin's home.
"On the Gallian Front" is the textbook format in which Valkyria Chronicles is presented to gamers. Very linear in fashion, as a textbook should be, still presents tons of additional sequences and battles as one progresses through the story.
Battle sequences consist of Squad 7 battling against Imperial Forces in some way or another. Your goal is to defeat the enemy, capture their flag, and raise your own! To help you on the battlefield is the command centre where you can gather new recruits how specialize in areas such as shocktroopers, lancers, scouts, engineers, and snipers. Each class has a distinct role and will be important in their own ways. Each recruit in each class, however, will be unique. Some may thrive in meadows and cower in cities. Using such a troop may cause Squad 7 to fail when subjected to an urban environment. Choose wisely.
Troop classes, weapons, and the tank, Edelweiss, can all be upgraded over time and as you deem fit. Characters cannot level individually, only as a troop class. Makes sense for a military based game.
Visually, Valkyria Chronicles is one of the nicest looking titles on any console. A watercolour engine that also uses pencil creates stunning sceneries that will leave you feeling of content. The audio of Valkyria Chronicles matches the visuals beautifully. A well thought out original score creates an atmosphere of tension, shock, calmness, and happiness, at the correct times, I might add.
This is certainly a must own for PS3 owners who are fans of the strategy genre. However, if you are not, Valkyria Chronicles is the title that may change your mind.
