Vita Sales "Exceed Expectations," Top 1.2 Million Worldwide

After one week in the major markets around the world, how has the PlayStation Vita fared?

Well, the press release we received today makes it plain: Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that global sales of their new portable has reached 1.2 million units worldwide as of February 26. That's actually only four days after the Vita launched in North America and Europe. Furthermore, software sales have surpassed 2.0 million units at both retail and on the PlayStation Network.

Said SCE President and Group CEO Andrew House:

"PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the reaction we're seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling. The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. To sustain momentum, we're working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe."

Offering a deeper and more immersive gameplay experience than has ever been seen in handheld entertainment before, the Vita seems to have resonated with quite a few gamers. The dual analog sticks, beautiful 5" high-def OLED multi-touch screen, powerful quad core processor, tilt function, built-in microphone, and front and rear cameras make this a diverse and entertaining device. And with both 3G and Wi-Fi available, the Vita "will enable infinite possibilities for users to 'encounter,' 'connect,' 'discover,' 'share' and 'play' with friends wherever they are."

Are you a proud owner, too?

Ahhh, that feels good! lol! XD

As for me, no I'm not a proud owner yet. I was planning on waiting for a must have title like I did with the PSP. (Didn't adopt until Crisis Core) But from friends and other folks, I haven't heard anything but good things about this device. It's getting harder to resist.

Uncharted GB is a must have title for gamers.Best hand held game created imo.I think you meant must have japanese game or jrpg since the psp had much better games than crisis core.

Crisis Core is hands down the best PSP game I've ever played. It was the only PSP game I purchased day one. I'm curious to know what you consider a PSP system seller. Not everyone would like Crisis Core, I'm sure, but it was pretty awesome. (Critics think so too.)

I don't mean must have jRPG. I mean must have game. I played Uncharted GB on my friends PSVita, and while it's a must own for Vita owners, it's not a Vita seller for me. I actually meant what I said when I needed a must have title. The kind of must have that you must have whether you have the console or not... like you need to buy the console just for that game. I highly doubt a launch title is truly indicative of the best to come in the next couple years for Vita.

Crisis Core was that game. Crisis Core was an action RPG.

AC is my favorite franchise this gen, but the PSP title was weak-sauce. Very poor control scheme without a second analog.

Crisis Core was definitely up there. For me, the God of War games on PSP were slightly more impressive, but once you're looking at the cream of the crop the distinction generally boils down to personal taste. As long as everyone's happy it's all good :).

There're quite a few must-haves in the launch line alone. I got Uncharted:GS, Wipeout:2048, Rayman:O, UCVM3, and they Vita is actually better than I thought. I traded in a bunch of games while I had an value on them, and got the Vita next to nothing, and so far, I've experienced no glitches with the system. I thought between a gaming pc, and my ps3, the Vita was just redundant. The games alone proved me wrong.

I totally get what Underdog is saying and Crisis Core is a excellent example that experience was only available on psp. Its the reason I bought my psp then there was Birth By Sleep,Dissidia,Peace Walker etc... Gravity Daze looks great but Im not hyped enough to go buy a Vita for it. Rayman Origins is awesome but its on all platforms.

Actually, you and other Western consumers are among the 620,000 who bought the system outside of Japan. That's the numbers being mentioned on some articles and sites like Forbes.

The 620,000 units numbers come from the US, EU and AU markets.

Those numbers went beyond the 578, 812 units sold so far in Japan.

And the device has only begun to sell on Western markets. So things are def looking good for Vita.

I seriously hope monster hunter comes out for the vita sooner or later. I've been hearing news that goes back and forth saying there will be a monster hunter coming out...or there wont and whatever.

Great to hear that the VITA sales have "exceed expectations." I just hope that more awesome games come out and that developers don't back off from this awesome gadget.

I'm still wondering about the previous claims that the Vita is more powerful than the PS3. Though impressive for a handheld, none of the demos I've seen of it seem to demonstrate that...even at a lower resolution.

Well, to be fair, in the heat of the worst hype there were quite a few who claimed that the Vita would be almost as powerful as the PS3. "It could run ps3 games" were at some stage rumoured too.
And I believe this is what Xnon has in mind.

That's OK, I wasn't really being that clear. I didn't believe any of the previous claims and was mocking them, not trying to say the Vita is garbage or anything. I don't know where people got that idea before myself, unless they were AGAIN talking about the CPU being more powerful than the Cell's PPU.

Anyway, still not interested in Vita, I've played it, it's fun. I'd just prefer to play my PS3. And I don't want to take that risk that these games will be ported over to PS4 or PS3 like the PSP games did, and get the Vita for nothing.

Although there are some awesome, awesome looking games on this system. I'm glad it's doing well as a PS homer.

Gents, I did mention about a week or so ago about a "U" sales profile.

Let us remember that these are the initial sales over the first week. Sony, as any corporation would, will use the initial sales burst to the hardcore gamer as part of their marketing push to highlight PsP Vita is well on its way.

I stand by my earlier statements that we will only really know, in 6 months or so if momentum is there. I think it will drop to a trough and then re-ignite over the holiday season (or after E3) if more competitive bundles are released and prices come down by 15% to 30% over time.

Sony is reaping profits and "word of mouth" from the early adopters - you guys. This business is important to them as it makes you part of the early ecosystem that will tout the system everywhere you go and is seen in public being used...

I think technically, the machine is fantastic from what I see... what will be interesting to see - 6 months to a year from now - is what the average adoption ratio is when taking into consideration mobile devices and tablets...

It is all very interesting to me and will enjoy watching how things develop. I will stay out of the Vita domain for now, with a possibility of getting it in 2013 if I feel compelled to do so...

What you say is very true, of course. But I still think the numbers are encouraging, and this positive response both from consumers and critics should result in more sales from the "on the fence" crowd.

Longevity will be determined by the software, and only the software. That much, I'm fairly certain of.

I agree Qubex - it's far too early to say anything either way - but sometimes it's just nice to sit back, relax and enjoy the good news and the happy cheers when they pop up. If you know what I mean.

Hehe - it's exciting! This feels like a horse race where the Vita is the new horse, the wildcard that no-one really know what to expect from. My brain says "look at the odds, you fool" while my heart says "but it's such a gorgeous animal, this one! Healthy, eager...!".

I *could* now come with a couple of details regarding the launch here in northern Europe that should cause minor concern, but I won't bother. Let's just see how this plays out. :)

I contributed to the 1.2 million as well. I picked up my PSVita on Saturday 2/25/12. I am currently enjoying UnCharted Golden Abyss, it is an excellent game. This was my first portable gaming system since the original Gameboy. I was planning to wait to get it, but once talking to a friend and getting a chance to play a couple of demos at Gamestop, I was impressed, so I got rid of several things over the weekend and used that credit to get my PSVita. I am looking forward to MotorStorm RC cars that comes out on 3/6/12. I do not regret my purchase at all, the PSVita is an awesome system and worth the purchase.

1) Japan's two-day total was closer to half the NA/EU four-day total.
2) Japan's four-day total was essentially the same as its two-day total.
3) Both numbers represent the first "week" of sales (that is, the launch frenzy), though both "weeks" are partial.

However, the NA/EU numbers actually include the advance sales from the previous week, I'm sure, so there is that negative slant if you really want one.

Wasn't searching for a negative slant, man, just defending Japan. People were making like the EU and US alone would double Japan's sales at launch but it seem each of the region did just as well as Japan. 600,000 divided by 2 is 300,000.

is that all?
pretty poor considering this includes the total ammount including the JP sales where its been out for 2 freaking months!
makes you wonder though, if the 3G bundles are sold out everywhere in EU, the WIFI ones too a friend of mine wanted to get one today but the stores had 0 left.
and $ony announced last week the first access bundles are sold out, how many of those were available?
if all 3G units in EU are sold out, and all first access bundles, you would expect that to be a dam side higher then 1.2M units!
and thats not counting JP and asia!

I had to read again but then I actually agree. At first I thought 1.2 mill were only for NA and European regions? 1.2 in TOTAL? For the whole world? That's... Can't be more than a couple hundred thousand across the entire Europe then? Or?

what worries me even more is now WIFI and 3G units are sold out nationwide, and so are the 16GB and 8GB cards, and so are many of the games.
they sold poorly, AND there sold out!?
WTF has $ony been doing in the past 2 months!?

The Good news:
I am part of the 1.2 Millions of PS Vita owners. Yippee!

Now on to the bad news:

My Vita's rear camera is a dud. Nothing but a black screen and system freeze. Trying to play Cliff Diver nets me a screen full of static. After doing everything I could find online to fix the problem, looks like I'm going back to my Gamestop for a replacement.

Why is my PS Vita camera not working?
Answer ID: 3790

Check the following items:

- Make sure there is a memory card inserted. A memory care is required to use the camera.

- Are you blocking the camera lens with your finger?

- Are you running an application that supports the camera? Not all applications have camera support.

Try powering off and powering back on the system and trying the camera application again. You should also confirm you are running the latest PS Vita firmware.

Also this one:

What can I do if there are picture problems on the PlayStation Vita?
Answer ID: 3745

If the PS Vita has no picture or your are experiencing picture problems, try the following steps:

Make sure the system is on
To turn the PS Vita on, make sure you press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. When the power comes on, the PS button will light up blue one time and then the initial settings screen is displayed.
Turn off the system
If the screen does not appear even though the PS button lights up blue one time, try the following. Press and hold the power button for more than 30 seconds to completely turn off your system. Then release the power button and press and hold it again for 5 seconds to start up your system.
Check the brightness settings.
Press and hold the PS button to bring up the brightness settings and turn up the brightness.
Are there any lines or spiderweb like effects on the screen?
If there are lines or spiderweb effects on the screen, this indicated that the PS Vita screen is damaged. The system is considered out of warranty and will need service.
Try Restoring the PS Vita
Go in to Safe Mode and select "Restore the PS Vita" option. This will restore the PS Vita to factory settings.
If none of these work
The system will need to be sent in for service if none of these options work. Click here for service information
