Phantasy Star Online 2 Hitting Vita Next Year...Presumably

It's never a good idea to assume but then again...it can be fun.

Sega has announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will launch in North America and Europe next year. The long-anticipated sequel will adopt the controversial free-to-play format when it arrives.

The only downside is that the publisher didn't mention platforms. We're fairly certain it'll come to the PC but beyond that, we can only guess based on the Japanese platforms: It's already out on PC in Japan, and PSO2 is also slated to hit the PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android platforms. Therefore, we'd like to assume that a Vita iteration is coming our way, too.

If you don't remember, the first PSO launched on the Dreamcast back in 2001 and was one of the very first subscription-based MMOs on consoles. It gained quite the loyal following and those fans have been waiting for a sequel...okay, it's a really long wait, but other PSO titles have dropped in between, including Phantasy Star Revolution, which came to the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. Yeah, PS2; it was on the cusp of the new generation; the 360 was already out but the PS3 wasn't.

I think Free to Play is an okay model for this, I might have tried it if it was on PS3 but as such...

I played Phantasy Star Portable on the PSP and that was a pretty bland experience, to put it mildly. I don't think even a Free To Play model will make me want to bother taking this one for a test ride unless it receives really good reviews.

Sony had to have something to do with this, brining it to Vita. While I appreciate the fact that Im suppose to be able to play freely between the Vita and PC,at least in Japan, I would have rather just played it on my PS3.

Cross play would come in very nice here.

Ahhh, Phantasy Star my old friend. I wish they would just make a Phantasy Star II remake. I am still playing Phantasy Star II on the Vita. Such a fantastic game that stands the test of time.

Never played this rendition of Phantasy Star. So I cannot say it sucks or is great. I may have to give it a try. Just wish it was a turn based offering. Free to play on the Vita sounds good to me.
