Killzone: Mercenary Announced For Vita

We need more Killzone.

Thankfully, we're getting it, and it's coming to Sony's new portable. At Gamescom 2012, Killzone: Mercenary was announced for the PlayStation Vita, along with a teaser trailer that kicks much ass.

We've seen this franchise go handheld before; Killzone: Liberation was available for the PSP, but that was a third-person shooter. Given the dual analog sticks of the Vita, Mercenary should be a very different experience...in all the right ways. There's traditional FPS gameplay as well as touchscreen melee attacks (as shown off in the trailer), and there's the obvious hint that instead of controlling a member of the ISA, you're gonna be a merc this time around.

We don't know when the game is scheduled to arrive, but we're hoping it'll be soon. Chances are, we'll see a lot more details emerge for this game as the year progresses, and we're psyched.

This looks like a real FPS on the Vita! Not that washed out look we saw in RBS and will by the look it see in CoD Vita :(. GG is a great dev and Nhilistic is not, sorry. I am guessing Killzone 4 will be an UNREAL PS4 launch title! Brutal Melee Touch FTW!

Looks pretty great, though I'm not into all that touch screen stuff at least it's easy.

Out of topic question. Why is it that most of the time portable titles are different then the console ones? Is it because another studio handles them? Im referring to titles like COD Black Ops and Assasins Creed

Well... I want my portable experiences to be different. I mean, if every game was the same on both platforms, why would anyone EVER go for the one that is naturally going to be limited ie. the portable version?

Besides, such new experiences can really help to flesh out the overarching lore of a series as will undoubtedly be done with AC.

I'll be honest, at first I was disappointed because at first glance it looked like the Helghast were still being used as the antagonists in spite of them being arguably easier to sympathize with than the ISA. But I just dug a little deeper and found out that as a mercenary in this game the player will actually be fighting for both sides. So we finally will get to fight along side the Helghast in the story so this game is now definitely on my radar.

little confused about why the people in the trailer had m4's and other current guns, but gameplay looked good and thats all that counts

Well this changes the playing field somewhat, the Vita will indeed come to life with these titles, unless people are too hooked onto their iPhone and Android pads.

From the bunch of games we have on the offering here, no other mobile platform can really compete with the quality on show. Sure there are some really good platformers on mobile, but I think the more full blown 3D games are still lacking somewhat. We will have to see how devs translate the big hitting games onto these mobile platforms other than the Vita.

Only time will tell whether or not the Vita will remain an exclusive platform for the highest of quality games. Sony properties at least will enjoy this exclusivity, but will these AAA portable games be enough to sustain the Vita for many years to come?

Q!

That's a pretty cool idea, and with it running on the KZ3 engine should be a real powerhouse. Too bad it's Killzone getting preferential treatment and not the, in my mind, more deserving Resistance. Too late for that I guess.

Can't say I like that the trailer was pretty much all live action. Makes me think that this game is actually still a really long way off. Playing both sides of the war though, taking contracts at will could provide a really cool experience and just imagine if it changed things up and allowed Play, Create, Share ideals with players able to come up with missions for each other and alter levels and the like. That'd be truly awesome.

Speaking of Killzone, if anyone's interested I'll be posting a review for Liberation here at the weekend and 3 probably some time next week :)

what happened to $ony cambridge, they were suppose to be doing this.
eh, probably a better thing since this is GGs franchise.
interesting to see how this turns out, i hope they bring back allot of the boss battles that made 2 so great!
3 had better level design and variation, but it was so repetitive it got real boring real fast!
i wish they would move the QTEs to the back touch pad also, it gets so annoying having to take your hand off the device to use the touch screen!

While there's something about live action anything in video games that always comes across as campy to me, the actual game is looking good. I hope this one delivers because I want it as my first Vita FPS.
