New Vita 2000 Model Can Use Smartphone Micro USB Charger

As revealed last month, the new PlayStation Vita for Japan will be lighter and thinner. And it'll be available in six sweet colors, too.

At the time, Sony did say they had ditched the proprietary charger, and the Vita 2000 had changed to a Micro USB port. Okay, but does that mean you can use the standard Micro USB charger your smartphone probably uses? That'd come in awfully handy at certain times, wouldn't you say?

And yes, it does work that way. SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed via Twitter (as cited by DualShockers) that the new Vita model does indeed support a Micro USB smartphone battery charger:

"You’ll be happy you’re using a PS Vita 2000, because it can be charged with any Micro USB smartphone battery charger."

Sony currently has "no plans" to bring the new Vita to other regions besides Japan. However, with sales continuing to slide, they may be forced to spice things up pretty soon. That price drop hasn't really boosted those sales numbers very much. Then again, not much will happen when the software is so severely lacking, so bring on the exclusive games, damnit.

not sure if they were behind the times or merely trying to make sure you had to spend your money on their charger. Sony has a history of making you use their custom extra's. Memory cards, chargers, etc.

Kraygen,
They are behind the times in the sense that they *used* to get away with this kind of sh*t - they all did. But it's not like that anymore. That's why they are behind the times. They need to keep up with the market.

Don't know if this is the one or not, but was talking to some people the other day about how Sony was introducing a vita with a lower quality screen but at the same price. Is this it?

It truly is sad how the vita has turned out to be because of the lack of developer support. I love playing games on it and now I've run out of games to keep me playing, but it would have been nice to charge the vita via my phone charger while I was out and about.

It's Sony's fault.

Giving virtually zero attention to PSVita but giving it all to PS3, releasing virtually all games for PS3 and not PSVita even though PS3 is at 80 million and still selling well while PSVita is the complete opposite.

Requiring memory cards, not including one and overpricing them.

Proprietary crap.

No removable battery.

Not making PSVita a way that making a PSVita port for a game it's extremely cheap and fast so it could be buy the home console version and get the PSVita version for free or an extra few bucks.

And there's probably more.

Oh, and not releasing a cheaper PSVita model that competes with 3DS prices and attracts casuals and kids.

It's ridiculous they didn't support this standard for chargers already from day 1.

The whole Vita project stinks of "old days" back when electronic giants all made each their own custom twists on everything to force the consumers to buy expensive peripherals.
I'm tempted at saying I am glad they failed so hard with this.

battery chargers?
so that means the portable battery chargers will work right?
gone through god knows how many of them with my iphone and none of them would work with the vita, hell even my 15000mah, the most powerful portable charger sold here, does not have a high enough output to charge the dam thing!
hope so, if so, welcome to the 19th century $ony!

this puts perfectly why the vita is dead.
it just feels so last generation!
hardware wise, well, theres plenty of portable devices which will out perform it, and there not even gaming units!
and software wise, well, im not going to start theres not enough time to list every feature the vita does not have that it should.
i really wish $ony would do a complete redesign of the vita, say sorry we f*cked up, and give us a true next gen portable experience!
a vita with the tegra 4 chip, now that would be something worth hyping up!!!!!

well as much as i want to get a blue ps vita i like the origonal design and look better for some reason and plus idk if i can wait long enough for the new ps vita's to come out in the rest of the world i'm contemplating trying to getting a vita for christmas so i'll probably just end up getting the origonal one and put up with the stupid charger and less bettery cos there are a bunch of games i want to play on the vita at the end of the year through the summer holidays(summer for us southern hemisphere dewlers) or christmas holidays whatever you preferr to call it but yea i don't think i can wait that long for the coloured vitas so yeah.

happy gaming =)

well, my battery charger is RavPower 14000mAh, it's been perfect so far as it has 2 ports that I could charge my phone and my tab together. And it's juicy enough. http://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-External-14000mAh-Incredible-Motorola/dp/B00EHEEFWY/
