Sony: Vita Remains A "Much Loved And Respected Machine"

The PlayStation Vita deserves to be more popular than it is. Unfortunately, the sales continue to be very low.

That doesn't mean Sony is giving up, though. During a recent DigitalSpy interview with SCE UK Managing Director Fergal Gara, the company admits that sales thus far aren't quite where they want them to be, but-

"It’s important on both levels. It’s not the biggest seller we’ve ever had, but it is still a very much loved and much respected machine."

Gara added that it's "now far more keenly priced" and it's also "becoming more of a digital machine in terms of more and rich digital content." Of course, it also makes for a great companion to the newly released PlayStation 4, as Sony mentioned in a recent trailer. But in the end, Gara admitted that it doesn't matter how Sony views the device; all that matters is what gamers think of it:

"We believe that feature is very compelling; it doesn’t matter what we think, it matters what gamers think, and as of tonight they get a chance to try it and give us their feedback, and we’re hopeful that feedback will be good and therefore it has a dual life from here on in, both as a standalone, very effective gaming machine and as a brilliant companion to PS4."

Well, what do you think? The general consensus is that Sony simply needs to produce more games - specifically, more exclusive games - for the handheld. That would help a lot.

I really enjoy having my Vita. I've given it a lot of time since I purchased it last February. However, I'm less concerned about Sony's production quantity of exclusives. Those have been plentiful. Uncharted, KZ, LBP, Tearaway, WipEout, and Gravity Rush are all quality productions by Sony.

It's the third party support that bites. I can't think of many third party exclusives for the system that aren't lacking in effort and quality.

Almost got one when I saw them going for $155, but then I remembered those memory cards.

they really need to do something about that. it's the most annoying thing about the system. An 8GB card just isn't enough room to have more than a handful of games on there and the larger capacity cards are way overpriced. I have DOA5, NGS2 & Xenogears. I'd like to have a few other games on there as well but can't. It wouldn't be as bad if I could just keep the save files in a folder like the PSP or PS3 can. But no, Vita's game's keep the saves embedded into the game file. This makes it a hassle to have to always transfer off your complete game file to your PC or PS3 in order to make room for a new game. It's lame.

It's pretty odd man, but I'm glad you enjoy yours for DOA5. I can picture you havin a blast with that thing over Christmas.

I do play DOA5+ a lot on it. And my Vita gets good use year round. It's the instant on - instant off access of the little unit that works so very well for me.

There's actually quite a few in production for it, it just that almost all of them are only being released in Japan.

keeping the hardware toys there is hardly helping either.
the biggest complaint with the vita is the inability of connecting it to the TV.
$ony fixes that with vita TV, than releases it exclusively for JP!
WTF!?
wheres the logic in that?

... And in other breaking news from the Sony marketing department, the PS4 is the best console and their TVs are mighty fine too.

I mean, come on. "Loved and respected"... Where, again? In the Sony offices? "Ignored" is a better description.

I think he was referring to those who actually own the Vita, which of course doesn't do them much good for future sales.

But I do believe it's true that the majority of Vita owners really do love the unit.

I would buy it if it had more games and ones that I would play. I bought a PSP that I hardly ever used just because the games werent ever what I wanted to play.

.... Thought about the games though, does it make more sense to have old school JRPG's and game styles from PS and PS2 days on the Vita? The few games I have seen for the machine are newer style but the graphics remind me more of the older games.
