Innuendo-Laden Vita Ad Ruffles Plenty Of Virtual Feathers

Sex sells...but sometimes it just doesn't work.

Sony published a new commercial for the PlayStation Vita on its Euro PlayStation YouTube channel last week but not long after, the video was set to private due to viewer backlash.

As you can see, the entire ad is one giant sexual innuendo and it's not exactly sexy; it's more uncomfortable than anything else. Here's a snippet of the dialogue:

"I bet you've already done it today. Or are you afraid you're doing it too often? In your bedroom under the blankets? Or perhaps you prefer the kitchen or the toilet?"

Yeah, not exactly subtle and the obvious reference to masturbation isn't getting past anyone. She was talking about the Remote Play feature that links the PlayStation 4 and Vita but let's face it, that's not what the ad is really about. The question is, does it really qualify as offensive or is it just in poor taste? I think I'm going to opt for the latter. And Sony only did it because the Vita doesn't have any games.

Yeah, I said it.

... at least they're trying ... <_< ... there's still a difference between inappropriately advertising a product and not advertising it at all. With the latter, it would seem like the product is totally dead, beyond hopes of ever living up to any of its potential use even by the product maker's standards. Although, with this kind of commercial, one might say Sony was trying to further kill their product (at least, in that part of the world). Personally, I kind of think the advertisement is okay : ))

Actually Sony knew perfectly well what they were doing here.

You see, this was NOT the first time they've done this sort of thing in Europe.

And like the last time, it got everyone's attention. And THAT was the whole point of it.

It doesn't matter that they took the video down. It doesn't matter that they would apologize for it.

What matters to them, is that people are aware of the Vita.

Even if it escapes Sony PR that people won't be talking about the device at all, but about their poor taste in creating adverts.

For crying out loud, just show what the Vita does. Show some games. MAKE some games for it, Sony.

Sex, violence and crudeness are the crutches of the uncreative. I'm tired of seeing it everywhere. That's why I don't watch TV, don't listen to the radio, avoid most modern movies, and barely buy any new games. Every media outlet is overflowing with filth, and I don't want to "deal with it," as the common response reads. Everyone doing it does not excuse it.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's more about how those elements are used. I mean Game of Thrones has sex, violence, and crudeness and it's one of the best tv shows ever created. To immediately say anything with those elements is uncreative is simply wrong.

can't they at least commit to one or two big budget Sony franchises that haven't appeared yet on the platform. Make a stink'n GoW or Infamous already.
I expected Sony to not gain a whole lot of third-party support with big budget games but I didn't expect Sony to give up themselves.

so when is Sony just going to strip the majority of the Vita's inner-processing and just offer a remote-play only version of the handheld? This way they could sell it for like $100 and actually make the reason to own the Vita a little bit more welcome.

i find the idea of anything not having games a very relative thing from person to person i would say its got some game cos there are games out there that you can get on the vita that apeal to for the vita but there oviously isn't any that appeal you ben abnd i can't speak for anyone else round here except my self but i tend to disagree in the general sense because it is selective and relative statement and thats the stance that i have held for awhile. and that has been said about probably every other platform by every other person at some point in time cos there was nothing there that interested them so yeah its a very selective and relative statement to say about the vita.

but the ad more than anything in and off its self is provocative and if thats what they were going for congratz you did it but it made me uncomfortable and i didn't get any of it really until the end of the ad which i don't think was the idea

happy gaming

I'm european and have many a time laughed and facepamled over American reactions to these kind of things.

But this was just tacky and *stupid*. Totally, embarrassingly, immaturely so. It doesn't look to have been made for the European market at all. At least not by europeans.

I bet the crap would've really hit the fan if she said, "on the public transit, or in the movie theater (pee-wee herman!)"

Ad's a bit tacky, but I'm not sure it's worth all the excitement it's generating. We've just had a stack of great games released and this is what we all get excited about? I'd put this in the 'tacky but ignorable, move on' camp for me, and let all the male teenagers that enjoy innuendo enjoy it (the ad's probably aimed at them).
