AT&T Confirms Data Plan Prices For Vita, 500k Sold In Japan
It's always good to know exactly how much a product is going to cost in the long run, especially when we're talking about those pesky data plans.
We had heard unofficial information concerning AT&T's price plans for the 3G model of the PlayStation Vita in the US. AT&T is the exclusive 3G provider for Sony's nifty new portable.
Now, we have the official numbers: for 250MB of data, you'll pay $15 per month, while 2GB will cost you $25/month. Both plans operate on a month-by-month basis, which means you won't be forced into signing any contract for 3G Vita usage. You will also "have free access to more than 24,000 Wi-Fi hot spots nationwide."
In comparison to most 3G data plans, this seems pretty normal. The only question is clear- how many gamers are going to purchase this game-centric device and pay for a monthly data plan, when they may already have a data plan for their smartphone or tablet? It'll be a challenge for Sony, but we're certain gamers know what they want. ...don't they?
As a side note, Sony has confirmed at the Consumer Electronics Show that the Vita has "sold" over 500,000 units in Japan. We won't get into a debate over sold and shipped; let's just say that's a pretty good number, and implies that more Vitas were sold in the previous week than in week three.

What we may see is the traditional pattern where by we get spikes on launch and then a gradual tapering off... and then spikes again once the price is cut 12 months from now with the possibility then of a sustainable increase.
Once the market has been well served we will see saw between spikes and dips depending on actual software released. A Monster Hunter release in Japan will cause an enormous spike for example. In the US and EUROPE a MGS release will again drive a huge spike for a little while before tapering off...
I do believe Sony will get their numbers, however it may be a very wild ride to get there with huge swings up and down depending on price, software being released and general economic market conditions.
It will be an interesting roller coaster to watch...
