Sony Looking To Major Franchises To Boost Vita's Longevity

The launch lineup for the PlayStation Vita is mighty impressive. But as usual when considering a new piece of Sony hardware, it's about embracing a marathon rather than a sprint.

So what does the Vita have in store for us down the road? Well, more games; specifically, more recognizable big-name franchises. Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller told GameSpot UK that in addition to games like Resistance: Burning Skies, other familiar titles are on the way.

"What we really wanted to do, and I think we learned from past, most recent, handheld device launches, is that you don’t want to launch strongly and then go dark for three or four months and have nothing…So in subsequent months for Vita, we have launch, then we have MLB, then we got Mortal Kombat, then Resistance, then Little Big Planet, then Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed."

Okay, so add a bunch more to the Vita's future library. Although the hardcore gamers will always want new IPs (and indeed, we require fresh ideas to keep the industry moving forward), it's always crucial to have wildly popular franchises on your platform. For example, being a big Assassin's Creed fan, my interest level in the Vita just went up a notch. See how that works?

i hate to say but a call of duty game will do wonders for the vita here in the US as in Europe. If they are smart they should do a call of duty focused on single player with near features and level high scores.

Funny you say this... Sony should have thought about this 2 years ago and made sure the Vita had a Call Of Duty title ready for it on launch... would have been huge.

Could you imagine the sales on day one of Vita had a COD and a Monster Hunter on launch day...

And then 6 months later a Final Fantasy as well...

First 6 months sales number... 5 million units sold :)

COD would equal Cash On Demand for the VITA. Qubex hit it on the head. COD on launch would have made VITA a vital handheld for the COD Borg. I have contemplated this but I think that ActiVision is too deep under the bedcovers with Microsoft to be such a big supporter of a Playstation product. Yes, even without MS having a handheld machine of its own. People who purchase a VITA are more likely to purchase a PS3/4 as well. Guilty by association.

Also, ActiVision stated at one point that they wish to observe VITAs
user base grow before they jump in. Which of course is bullshit because we all know even Call of Duty Cookies would sell a billion units.

Last point, a COD title MUST have constant online multiplayer to survive. If what i'm hearing regarding ModNation racers NOT supporting this feature is true then it was wise of Sony and ActiVision to wait till this feature is ready for prime time.

I totally agree !!! When i see these titles on the shelves, i will have no choice but to get a VITA.

1. Call of Duty w/ Multiplayer
2. Grand Theft Auto (Made for Vita with new story !)
3. God of War
4. NBA2K or NBA Jams
5. Madden

If I remember correctly, GTA had at least 3 titles on the PSP, so I'm pretty sure some GTA titles will be showing up for the Vita too, just have no Idea when(although sooner would've been much better than later).

Unfortunately Nintendo has made Monster Hunter a KEY title in combating VITA sales. 3DS are being hunted like monsters because of it. Well played Ninty!

But if and when it does come for VITA the battle will be an ALL OUT WAR! Just please SONY... DO NOT make Monster Hunter a PORT. Make it something special that can Only be found on Playstation!

How about the Resident Evil series? Monster Hunter could really help the Vita in Japan.

Okay, I'll throw some older series out there...Parasite Eve, and a new Dino Crisis game.
I loved Dino Crisis 2, and it had a cliffhanger ending that we never got to see resolved. I know that's a kind of "out there" series to request, but shouldn't the Vita have different types of games that might be considered too risky for the consoles? I don't want to be just playing slightly lesser versions of games I can already play on my PS3.

The sooner they have MGS, COD, GoW, Gran Turismo GTA, and Madden on Vita with full features is the better and quicker success vita will have.

Me personally was sold on Dual Analogs.

And spread those titles out just far enough from each other so each have their moment in the Sun but not too far where VITA sales lag. Hit em hard SONY. Marketing is your ultimate weapon.

I would like to see a new Persona game, Quantic Dreams' new game, and a true 2D Castlevania...maybe a sequel to Symphony of the Night w/ Alucard.

Well, apparently if you get the first edition version of the vita you can actually get it a whole week early it would appear!

From's Souls series would be an absolute must-buy for the Vita. A Dead Space would be kinda cool. GTA is a must, plain and simple. inFamous. and Valkyria Chronicles: There is simply no way for this not to happen, and if I have to go to Sega for it to, then I shall do so!

Other than that, new IPs!

P.S. Speaking of VC, does anyone else think that XCOM: Enemy Unknown may wind up being somewhat similar to the series? I hope so, because that would be awesome!

GTA of course! Crush 2 would also be bought. Alice could work well on a small screen! And any franchise from BioWare would peak my interest. Heck that'd be a system seller for me.

But now that I think about it I realised something interesting: I don't really like pure action games on portables much! So none of my favourite action franchises would be of much interest on my Vita: Crysis? Naah. Burnout? Meeeh (never liked the PSP burnouts). BioShock? I dunno...

When I look back at my favourite PSP titles none of them were action titles. No shooters, no racers, nothing of that sort.
The games I remember with fond memories were all based on exploration (Pirates), puzzles (Crush), management (Thrillville) or something like that. No pure action titles!

The screen is just too small and the controls too cumbersome for pure reflex games imo. Action games need a big screen and comfortable controllers!

Would BURNOUT: PARADISE or something like that interest you on the VITA? The PSP versions of BURNOUT were incapable of providing that full Burnout experience. Or is it just the small screen? Im kinda in the same boat. Id rather play the spectacular titles on the big screen. But i'm willing to give any game a try.

Paradise is one of the best car games I've ever played, right up there with NFS:Most Wanted. A Paradise 2 for the ps3 would not only be a obvious d1p but a preorder. But would I want either of them on the Vita? I don't think so!

I think it's a combination of the size of the screen, the small controls and the fact that action games require constant attention. You have to focus on the game 100%.

If SONY really has learned from the PSP and the PS3 then I can see how that strategy will sustain the VITA in the long run. Secure KEY franchises and pace the releases to maintain VITA in the spotlight. Hit the market with a huge title every few months. I'd say every 3 to 4 months. Then BOOM.. hit us with a new IP here and there. I have no doubt that SONY is cooking up some "marvelous shit* in the new IP department.

And don't forget ratchet and clank with multiplayer (Ratchet and Clank: 3 (up ur arsenal) type) and jak and daxter. Its not a party without these duos
Burnout, Armored Core, Naruto ultimate ninja storm, battlefield. Just get loads of franchises.
Throw in a few timesplitter remakes too (if crytek actually let crytek uk do it)

A new Borderlands
A new Mass Effect
A new Warhammer 40,000 game
A new Saints row game
A new Earth defense force game
A new Soul Caliber

I think sony gets it with the vita:)

Yes it would, simply because it would show that Sony hadn't learned from it's mistakes; They've had 6 years to sit back and learn from this generation and if they let MS have another huge head start then what crucial lesson did they forget...Again?

Besides, I've (and a ton other people) are so weary with this generation that we'll go out and buy whatever comes out first, just to have something new and exciting again.

truth be told..... sale numbers & the possibility of a year after competition release dont matter to me or those that enjoy gaming itself.... when next gen install, this gen will still have games made & we seeing wii is done & 360 not doing much but ps3 still runing...... Sony built on premium longtivity & the blueprint not changing next gen.... we should be concerned bout these next possible systems tryna enter cause they seem to have a new approach to console gaming.

we still got a list of games being dropped for Ps3 that will keep us occupied.... a late Ps4 date none to worry bout Sony built solid in this field. i only ask 1 thing of next gen..... DONT HAVE NO RIDICOLOUS PRICE TAGS OR IM DONE.

The PS3 is finally where it should be. it makes no sense to drop it for something shiner. With my collection of games, back log, and new games to add to the back log (ie The Last of Us), I have no need for a new system. Ditto my Xbox 360. WiiU only because it's what the Wii should have been (mostly). Throw in buying off of PSN/Xbox live, and what do I need a new system for? Prettier graphcs? 3D I can't see? Nope. Apart form WiiU, I migth just skip the next gen altogether. Heck, I still have a Gamecube game I've only just begun playing. I can wait until 2020 or so for a new system or two.
